Electricity is an extremely versatile form of energy. It is the basis of development of any country. The Electricity production and supply of Bangladesh is not organized and always faces the limitation of storage. It is good news for us that on 17th September, 2007, the production of electricity was 4,138MW which was the highest production and broken the all record of past but matter of regret that crisis doesn't remove. The general fact that we always watch and discuss about the crisis of electricity but don't concern and conscious how we utilize it. The rest crisis can be removed by changing our habit. Let's know about our habit and what should do to save energy...

1.      Habituated to Unplug

Þ    Unplug seldom-used appliances, like an extra refrigerator.

Þ    Unplug battery chargers when the batteries are fully charged or the chargers are not in use. Every house is full of little plastic power supplies to charge cell phones, PDA's, digital cameras, cordless tools and other personal gadgets. Keep them unplugged until you need them.

Þ    Use ceiling fans only when you're in the room. Fans don't cool down the house they just make people feel cooler by providing a breeze.

Þ    Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, home theater equipment and stereos into power strips; turn the power strips off when the equipment is not in use TVs and DVDs in standby mode still use several watts of power. Even when you think these products are off, together, their "standby" consumption can be equivalent to that of a 75 or 100 watt light bulb running continuously.

Þ    Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing; when replacing exhaust fans, consider installing high-efficiency, low-noise models.

  1. Set Computers to energy saving mode

Þ    Many people believe that equipment lasts longer if it is never turned off. This incorrect perception carries over from the days of older mainframe computers.

Þ    There is a common misconception that screen savers reduce energy use by monitors; they do not. Automatic switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is always the better energy-saving strategy.

Þ    Enable the "sleep mode" feature on your computer, allowing it to use less power during periods of inactivity. In Windows, the power management settings are found on your control panel. Mac users, look for energy saving settings under system preferences in the apple menu.

Þ    Configure your computer to "hibernate" automatically after 30 minutes or so of inactivity. The "hibernate mode" turns the computer off in a way that doesn't require you to reload everything when you switch it back on. Allowing your computer to hibernate saves energy and is more time-efficient than shutting down and restarting your computer from scratch.

Þ    Don't leave your computer on for more than an hour if you're going to be away.

  1. Take Control of Temperature

Þ    Use sunlight wisely. During the heating season, leave shades and blinds open on sunny days, but close them at night to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows. Close shades and blinds during the summer or when the air conditioner is in use or will be in use later in the day.

Þ    Set the thermostat on your water heater between 120 and 130 degrees. Lower temperatures can save more energy, but you might run out of hot water or end up using extra electricity to boost the hot water temperature in your dishwasher.

  1. Use Appliances Efficiently

Þ    Set your refrigerator temperature at 38 to 42 degrees Fahrenheit; your freezer should be set between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Use the power-save switch if your fridge has one, and make sure the door seals tightly.

Þ    Don't preheat or "peek" inside the oven more than necessary. Check the seal on the oven door, and use a microwave oven for cooking or reheating small items.

Þ    In your clothes washer, set the appropriate water level for the size of the load; wash in cold water when practical, and always rinse in cold.

Þ    Don't place lamps or TV sets near your air-conditioning thermostat. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.

Þ    Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units but not to block the airflow. Place your air conditioner on the north side of the house. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.

  1. Turn Out the Lights

Þ    Turn off lights and appliances when not using them. Switching off three 75-watt bulbs for two hours each night can save 2 percent on monthly energy bills.

Þ    Remember this at the office, too. Turn out or dim the lights in unused conference rooms, and when you step out for lunch. Work by daylight when possible. A typical commercial building uses more energy for lighting than anything else.

Þ    When a light blow, replace it with a compact-fluorescent bulb. These bulbs produce close to the same quality of light as incandescent, and they don't take extra time to light up, as the old fluorescents did. A 27-watt fluorescent puts out the same amount of light as a 100-watt incandescent. While the price of the fluorescent is substantially more, its lamp life is up to 4.5 years -- versus 167 days for conventional lighting.

  1. Avoiding energy during peak hours

Avoid using energy during peak hours. The key thing in regions suffering from energy shortages is to reduce electricity usage between noon and 7 p.m. In Bangladesh perspective

a. Peak-hour (Evening)-shortage-, which mainly affects residential and other Users. Our 2007 projected Peak demand is anticipated 5500 MW and shortage around 45% (2500MW) of our Generation.

b. Off-Peak-hour (Day)-shortage-, which affects Industries, Offices and other users?  Our Off-Peak hour demand in summer of 2007 will be 3850 MW and shortage is around 22% (850 MW) of Generation.

Air conditioners are the major energy culprits during peak hours. Try this method to cut down on all-day use: In the morning, turn your AC to a relatively cold setting to pre-cool your house, and then turn it off before noon, making sure to pull down shades and blinds. In a well-insulated, modestly sized house, this simple act should allow you to coast through the hottest part of the day. Always use tube light; change the habit, restricted to some home electronics appliances can remove this crisis.

Bangladesh has no energy security and due to climate change and other factors, world already fall in energy crisis. In this prospect Bangladesh needs long term plan to gain the sustainable production of electricity. The matter is we always tensed about the production but the most important thing is production and its sustainable use can remove the crisis of electricity.

seems like you have provided to Bangladeshi people about how to save energy, but I like to mention that people don't like to read in English ( when it's a scientific thesis ). It would have been better, if you had written it in Bangla.

Hillol
