Research and publication are the foundation for improving the quality of education in any country. To encourage students of Bangladeshi universities to take initiatives in research and paper writing, the following steps can be adopted, formulated based on the above example:
1. Emphasizing Research & Restructuring Practical Classes:
For example, at University of Rajshahi, in the ‘Fish Population Dynamics’ course, research work was conducted by dividing students into 10 groups. Similarly, in every university, practical classes across various courses should not be limited to theoretical or lab-based work only, but should also involve real-life research processes. Through this, students will get the opportunity to engage in realistic research and acquire the necessary skills for writing and publishing papers.
2. Enhancing Research Facilities:
Although most universities in Bangladesh have adequate lab facilities for practical classes, there are not enough resources and opportunities for research. In this regard, teachers’ personal labs or university labs should be made accessible to students, so that they can carry out research work even on holidays. For instance, like the home lab at Binodpur near University of Rajshahi is being used, similar local labs could be established in each university and respective departments as initiatives.
3. Training in Paper Writing:
Alongside research, teaching students the techniques of paper writing is extremely important. A short ‘Research Methodology’ module could be included in every course, where students would learn the rules of paper writing, reference management, and the publication process. Through this, they will learn how to prepare a research paper, where to submit it, and how to publish papers in international or local journals.
4. University Support:
University authorities should provide incentives for research activities. They can invest in research and encourage students to continue their research endeavors. This could include financial support, supply of materials, and arrangements for faculty assistance in managing research projects.
5. Publication Initiatives:
Every department should regularly take initiatives for publishing research papers. For example, the Department of Fisheries at University of Rajshahi set a target to achieve ten publications through the practical classes of just one course. Similarly, such initiatives can be taken in each department. At least one practical course per semester should be research-based, where students publish their research through these classes.
6. Collaboration with National and International Journals:
Each university should establish connections with national and international journals, so that students can easily submit their research papers. Additionally, universities may establish their own journals, where students and faculty can publish their research work.
In conclusion, it can be said that to make students more attentive towards research, it is essential to restructure practical classes to be research-oriented. At the same time, university authorities should take the initiative to create a research-friendly environment and arrange for regular training in research and publication for students.
