In this era of technology, especially in the field of research, the use of generative AI tools is increasing day by day. Researchers can now use this technology to complete their writing tasks more quickly and efficiently. However, it is important to adhere to certain guidelines when using AI, which researchers should follow with caution.
Firstly, the use of AI in writing articles should only aim to improve readability, grammar, and the overall language quality of the work. AI can assist in selecting the right words, forming proper sentences, and enhancing language quality in research writing. However, it should only be used as a supportive technology, and the entire writing process should not be done by AI. Human oversight and editing are extremely important, as AI can sometimes produce incorrect, incomplete, or biased information.
When using AI tools, researchers must disclose their usage. This is considered part of transparency, allowing readers, reviewers, editors, and other collaborators to know that AI was used in the writing process. Establishing such transparency helps build trust among everyone involved and makes it easier to comply with the respective terms and conditions of the tools or technology. Additionally, AI or AI-assisted technologies should never be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship in writing should remain primarily in human hands, as only the author can ensure the accuracy, originality, and correctness of the work. AI is merely a supporting technology; researchers are fully responsible for approving and submitting the final version of their work.
Using AI to create or edit images or graphics is prohibited. In research papers, generative AI or AI-assisted technologies should not be used to create or edit images or graphical abstracts. AI should not be used for image modification, adding or removing new features, or even adjusting brightness or contrast. However, if AI technology is used in any research to generate or analyze images, it must be described in detail in the methodology section of the research. Additionally, generative AI may be used to create cover art, but for this, researchers must obtain prior approval and ensure all necessary rights.
The use of AI and AI-assisted tools in research can be an effective and time-saving approach, but being aware of the proper use and limitations of this technology is extremely important. Discipline and caution are essential when using it in writing, and above all, researchers must remain responsible for their work.
