Interest in higher education in Bangladesh and the number of students seeking scholarships to study abroad is steadily increasing. However, an important point is that compared to India and other developed countries, the number of Bangladeshi students receiving scholarships to study overseas remains significantly lower. In 2023, more than 333,000 Indian students went to America for higher studies with scholarships, whereas for Bangladesh, the figure was only 18,000. This statistic clearly shows that, despite the considerable scope for Bangladeshi students to go abroad, many opportunities are still left unutilized.
The main issues here are research, planning, government initiatives, and the responsibilities of teachers. If government institutions, universities, and teachers in Bangladesh work together, then in the next few years, the number of Bangladeshi students in America could exceed 100,000, and in other developed countries as well.
1. Government initiatives and scholarship opportunities:
When a country helps its students to pursue higher education abroad, it plays a vital role in its foreign policy, economy, and educational development. Taking India as an example, the government and universities there have implemented various programs to support students in obtaining scholarships overseas, enabling them to secure admission to top universities.
In Bangladesh too, it is possible to enhance scholarship opportunities abroad through government initiatives. The government should form consortia with foreign universities, conduct widespread promotion for scholarships, and provide students with the necessary information regarding pursuing higher education overseas.
Besides universities, the government should establish dedicated scholarship funds and pay special attention to research and development sectors, enabling students to participate in meaningful research and enhance their skills. With government sponsorship, students could increase their academic connections and research collaborations with foreign universities.
2. Efforts by universities:
Just as government initiatives are important, so is the role of universities. If universities can develop proposed courses, research, or support programs for their students in line with the requirements of foreign universities offering scholarships, the number of students going abroad will rise.
Universities need to foster stronger relationships with foreign universities. Especially through research collaboration and the implementation of student exchange programs, more opportunities can be created for students. In addition, including internationally recognized courses in the curriculum and providing training for teachers can better prepare students for higher education abroad.
Moreover, it is crucial to enhance students’ research skills through university research labs, journal publications, and participation in international seminars. To secure scholarships at foreign universities, students must demonstrate research competence and academic readiness.
3. The role of teachers:
If teachers in Bangladesh can inspire their students toward higher learning standards and foster research, creativity, and confident thinking, the chances of students obtaining scholarships abroad will increase significantly.
If teachers improve their teaching methods, impart new research techniques, and encourage students to think independently, students will become much more capable of preparing for higher education abroad. Furthermore, if teachers facilitate networking and collaborations with foreign universities, it will create more international platforms for students.
When university teachers involve their students in research and offer them opportunities to publish in international journals, they not only generate pride for their country, but also gain global recognition through their research.
4. Dreaming big and adopting bold plans:
Some Bangladeshi students lack the vision to dream big. However, those who do dream big and plan accordingly can achieve success. Indian students have already taken significant steps toward obtaining scholarships to study abroad and have seen success. Bangladeshi students must follow in their footsteps.
Although the preparation period for studying abroad is long, it is a long-term goal. Therefore, proper planning, hard work, and a confident mindset are essential for student success.
5. International connections with universities:
The greater the number of international connections forged, the greater the opportunities for Bangladeshi students to obtain scholarships abroad. If Bangladeshi universities establish world-class educational and research environments and build relationships with foreign universities, the scope for students will expand significantly. Universities have the responsibility to initiate joint research opportunities and student exchange programs in collaboration with foreign institutions, which can create unique opportunities for Bangladeshi students.
Conclusion:
Currently, in 2023, while over 333,000 Indian students have gone to America for higher education with scholarships, only 18,000 students from Bangladesh have done so. However, with government initiatives, university efforts, and the support of teachers, this number can reach 100,000 in a short time. For this, proper planning, improving educational quality, and focusing on international relations are vital. If teachers responsibly guide students and universities create more scholarship opportunities, Bangladeshi students will be able to secure their place on the global stage.
