The world of research article publication is constantly facing new challenges. Recently, three new terms have become widely discussed: paper mill, review mill, and citation mill. These words symbolize fraudulent and unethical activities in the realm of article publication. Although these three processes are different, they are deeply interconnected and often complement each other.
Paper Mill:
A paper mill is an entity that produces and sells research articles on a large scale. However, most of these articles are of poor quality and filled with false information, fake research, or irrelevant data. Taking advantage of the growing pressure on researchers to publish, paper mills easily market substandard work. Many researchers pay paper mills to have their names included as authors on these articles. To secure their activities, paper mills employ various suspicious tactics. They bribe journal editors to expedite article publication. In many cases, they use dubious reviewers or editors to publish low-quality work. They may even place their own agents on legitimate editorial boards to manipulate the entire process in their favor.
Review Mill
The review mill process involves suspicious organizations or individuals providing fake reviews. These reviews are generally pre-written using predetermined templates. The main objective is to force researchers to cite specific articles. Through this, they create pressure to increase citations for certain researchers. The involved organizations or individuals are paid for these activities.
Citation Mill
The main job of a citation mill is to sell citations for research articles. This is a major way to artificially inflate impact in the research world. These citations are incorporated into legitimate articles via fake ones, which undermines the real value of research. Through citation mills, some researchers artificially boost their impact and call the ethics of research article publication into question.
The Interconnection of the Three Mills
Paper mills, review mills, and citation mills complement one another. Paper mills produce low-quality articles, review mills mask these articles with a veneer of legitimacy, and citation mills boost their citations. Together, these three processes cast a shadowy impact on scientific research.
What is the Solution?
To preserve the credibility of scientific publishing and research, researchers, publishers, and journals must exercise greater caution. Establishing transparent and robust editorial boards, using advanced technology to detect suspicious activities, and emphasizing transparency and ethics in research are absolutely crucial. Paper mills, review mills, and citation mills pose a major threat to the scientific community, and taking a firm stance against them has become an urgent necessity.
