If you are currently studying at university and dreaming of pursuing higher education abroad, make sure to enrich your CV; otherwise, you might fall behind in the competitive market for scholarships/funding, and your dream may remain unfulfilled. Here are 6 tips on how to strengthen your CV:
(1) Strive to achieve good academic results. Try to keep your CGPA above 3 (out of 4). While it’s not impossible to get funding with a CGPA below 3, making 3 your standard will help you perform better in the competition.
(2) Alongside your academic studies, undertake a research project under a teacher in your desired field. Try to publish the findings from such research as papers in good peer-reviewed journals. Your teacher will guide you through all steps of research and publication. Therefore, try to do your honors or master’s research project under a student-friendly mentor.
(3) Build a network with researchers outside your department. Find out who is writing review articles in your preferred field or related topics. Join them and start writing review articles yourself.
(4) If research in your field involves using computer software, learn those programs. Try to collaborate with someone skilled in those tools and publish research articles together.
(5) Programming or coding is very important for research work nowadays, so learn some coding or programming even if you have to pay for it or access free resources. Two of the most important modern programming languages are R and Python. Make sure to develop a solid foundation in both. Additionally, learn how to analyze data using Microsoft Excel, GraphPad Prism, SAS, MATLAB. You can also use YouTube to learn these skills. Always stay alert for opportunities to learn new skills.
(6) Attend research conferences at your university or in other cities on your field of study or related subjects. You don’t necessarily need to have your own data to attend. Join as a student, which often means a lower registration fee. At these conferences, you’ll learn about others’ research, and you’ll get an understanding of the current state of research in your chosen topic worldwide.
If you follow these tips, the sections of your CV on Skills, Research Experience, Publications, and Conference Attendance will become much stronger, making your CV more impressive overall and giving you a definite edge over others in the competition.
