What to Do to Protect Yourself from Plagiarism:

In recent times, plagiarism or intellectual theft has emerged as a serious problem in research, writing, and creative pursuits. Plagiarism means claiming someone else’s writing or ideas as your own, which not only negatively impacts professional life, but also has detrimental effects on academics and creativity. It is a punishable offense, and it is crucial to steer clear of plagiarism to maintain transparency in education and to respect creativity. Nowadays, many people—particularly those starting their careers—face problems with plagiarism as they are not aware of the risks involved. According to statistics from Elsevier, about 50% of plagiarism cases are reported each year, and the number is steadily increasing.

There are several main types of plagiarism. First is Direct Plagiarism or Verbatim Plagiarism, where someone copies text exactly from a source and claims it as their own. In Paraphrasing Plagiarism, the idea or message from the original source is written in one’s own words without proper attribution. Self-Plagiarism or Redundant Publication is when an author uses their previously published work without permission. Mosaic Plagiarism or Patchwork Plagiarism occurs when fragments from various sources are combined into a new text without proper citations. Idea Plagiarism involves using someone else’s theories or concepts without acknowledgement. Additionally, Accidental Plagiarism is when sources are not cited or are incorrectly quoted unintentionally, but it is still considered plagiarism nonetheless.

To avoid plagiarism, it is important to follow some key rules. Firstly, always accurately cite your sources. Every bit of information should have a citation, and any direct quotation should be placed within quotation marks and properly attributed. Even when paraphrasing, the original source must be cited. It’s helpful during research or writing to keep notes of all reference materials, which aids in proper citation later. You can also verify your writing using plagiarism checkers such as Turnitin, Grammarly, or Copyscape. Additionally, familiarize yourself with different referencing styles like APA, MLA, or Chicago and use the correct methods to cite your sources.

If you need to use any graph or diagram from a website, you must seek permission. Unless it is under a CC-BY license, you need written permission from the copyright holder to use graphs or diagrams. Even when reusing your own previously published work, you must provide the appropriate source citation to avoid self-plagiarism, whether it is print or pre-print.

Preventing plagiarism is the responsibility of authors, researchers, and publishers alike. If you discover someone has plagiarized your work, you should contact the relevant journal to file a complaint. The journal authority will review the complaint and, depending on the severity of the plagiarism, may correct the record, issue a warning, or retract the publication.

Avoiding plagiarism is a fundamental ethical practice. It not only enhances a writer’s creativity but also honors accurate information and original ideas. Adopting proper writing techniques and showing respect for others’ work is the most effective way to steer clear of plagiarism. We all need to remain vigilant to stay free from plagiarism.
