English speaking and writing skills are extremely important for Bangladeshi students. In today’s world, English is the main medium of international communication, business, and education. Acquiring these skills is essential for students, as it helps them improve academically, professionally, and socially.

Why English Skills Are Necessary:

1. Opportunities for Higher Education:

Many of Bangladesh’s renowned universities, such as BRAC University, North South University, and the University of Dhaka, conduct instruction in English. To achieve good results in exams like IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, and GRE for studying abroad, English proficiency is needed. Strong speaking and writing skills help students succeed in these tests and increase their chances of receiving scholarships.

2. Career Development:

In Bangladesh’s corporate sector and multinational companies, English is used as an important business language. Having English skills during job interviews and in the workplace enables students to stay ahead in the competition.

3. Global Communication:

English skills provide students with access to global sources of knowledge and the opportunity to use various e-learning platforms. This helps them communicate internationally, learn, and connect with others.

4. Academic Success:

Many textbooks in higher education are written in English, and students are often required to submit assignments, presentations, and projects in English. Furthermore, good English skills are needed to participate in seminars, discussions, and conferences.

How students can acquire English skills:

1. Institutional Education and Courses:

Students can take English courses from institutions like the British Council, which helps them improve grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and writing. Various courses are also available on online platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udemy.

2. Regular Speaking Practice:

By speaking English every day, students can develop their speaking fluency.

– Find a language partner: Practice English regularly with a language partner.

– Participate in speaking clubs and debates: Many universities organize speaking clubs and debate competitions. Participating in these activities boosts students’ confidence and improves their speaking skills.

3. Reading and Writing Practice:

– Read books, articles, and newspapers: By reading regularly, students can learn new words and understand sentence structure.

– Writing practice: Practicing writing every day, such as writing blog posts or short compositions, helps improve writing skills. Taking feedback from teachers makes learning even more effective.

4. Use Online Tools and Resources:

– Language learning apps: Using apps like Duolingo or Memrise, students can learn new words and sentences in a fun way.

– Writing tools: By using tools like Grammarly, students can find errors in their writing and improve its quality.

5. Watch English Media:

Watching English movies, TV shows, and documentaries increases students’ listening abilities and speaking skills. This way, they can learn correct pronunciation and commonly used expressions.

6. Practice Thinking in English:

When speaking English, thinking directly in English in your mind makes it easier to express your thoughts without delay. This naturally helps improve speaking fluency.

7. Participate in Workshops and Training Programs:

Many organizations arrange workshops focused on communication skills. By participating in these, students can learn tips and techniques to improve their English.

Preparation Strategies:

1. Set Clear Goals:

Students should set clear goals when learning English. For example, speaking fluently on a particular topic or writing an essay without mistakes. Holding onto clear goals makes the path to improvement clearer.

2. Daily Practice Routine:

Regular practice is most important when learning English. By reading, writing, and speaking English every day, even for a short time, students can make progress.

3. Record Progress:

Writing down what you’ve learned and daily practice helps to see progress clearly. Also, recording and listening to yourself speaking gives more opportunities to learn by analyzing them later.

4. Overcome Fear of Mistakes:

Many students are afraid to speak or write in English for fear of making mistakes. However, mistakes are a part of learning, so it’s important to have the attitude of learning through mistakes.

To achieve English proficiency, students can improve their speaking and writing abilities through an organized and consistent effort, which will enhance their academic and professional prospects.
