— Hear firsthand stories of research, scholarships, and the life of a world-class Bangladeshi scientist

A unique opportunity is coming for Bangladeshi young students and research enthusiasts. Biggani.org is hosting an exceptional interview event, where one of the country’s leading agricultural scientists and plant physiologists, Professor Dr. Mirza Hasanuzzaman of the Department of Agronomy at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, will speak directly with the audience. He is not only a renowned and respected name in Bangladesh but also across the global landscape of plant science and agricultural research.

From an Ordinary Student to a World-Class Scientist

Professor Dr. Mirza Hasanuzzaman began his academic journey at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, where he ranked first in his class and received a gold medal in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in agricultural science. He then completed his Ph.D. in 2012 at Ehime University, Japan, on the prestigious Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship awarded by the Japanese government. His research focused on ‘Environmental Stress and Antioxidant Metabolism in Plants’.

After his Ph.D., he did not stop. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, under the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Postdoctoral Fellowship. Later, he served as a senior researcher at the University of Tasmania under the Australian government’s Endeavour Research Fellowship. Returning to Bangladesh, he joined Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University as a lecturer in 2006 and rose rapidly through multiple promotions to become a full professor in 2017 — all at the same university.

A Global Footprint in the World of Research

The core of Professor Hasanuzzaman’s research revolves around one crucial question — in this era of climate change, how can agricultural crops survive under severe environmental stresses like salinity, drought, flooding, and heavy metal toxicity? What chemical defense mechanisms work inside plants? How can we externally boost crops’ resilience?

In his quest for these answers, he has made some fundamental discoveries that are now cited by plant scientists worldwide. He is among the first researchers to have proven that the plant antioxidant defense and glyoxalase systems function together in an integrated manner to cope with environmental stress.

The impact of his research is no longer confined to scientific journals — through a contract with the renowned Canadian company Acadian Plant Health, his technologies are now being applied in the field. His research has been funded by various organizations, including the World Bank, FAO, Bangladesh University Grants Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Bangladesh.

The statistics of his publications speak volumes about his global contribution. He boasts over 443 publications indexed on Scopus, cited more than 38,000 times. His h-index is 98, which is rare even among world-class researchers. He has edited over 20 books and authored more than 30 book chapters. He also serves as an editor or reviewer for over 80 international journals.

Most significantly, he was the only Bangladeshi-affiliated scientist included in Clarivate’s “Highly Cited Researcher” list in both 2021 and 2022 — that is, among the world’s most cited scientists.

Why Is This Interview Important for Bangladeshi Students?

Countless young people in Bangladesh dream of becoming scientists, going abroad for higher studies, or winning scholarships. But questions often arise — where do I start? How do I apply for scholarships? How do I get into research? How do I write research papers of international standard?

Professor Hasanuzzaman has walked this path himself — studying at a Bangladeshi university, earning a Ph.D. on a Japanese government scholarship, conducting postdoctoral research in Japan and Australia, and then returning home to continue world-class research. He actively collaborates with researchers from over 30 countries, and has supervised over 50 master’s students and five Ph.D. students.

The chance to learn directly from him is truly invaluable. Because he is not only a successful scientist — he is also a teacher, a guide, working from the soil of Bangladesh with a vision for the world.

A Chance to Get Answers to Your Questions

Are you interested in studying or researching agricultural science, botany, or environmental science? Are you thinking of pursuing higher education and scholarships in Japan, Australia, or other countries? Do you want to know how to set up a laboratory, publish in international journals, or collaborate with researchers from different countries?

This interview opens that opportunity to you. The person who has done all of these in his own life will share his experiences, the turning points of his journey, and his indomitable passion for science with young people like you.

This is a moment not to miss, to be inspired by a scientist honored with numerous awards and recognitions at home and abroad, including the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Young Scientist Award, Bangladesh University Grants Commission Gold Medal, and Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal.
