Preprints are currently playing a vital role in scientific research. It is a complete research paper published on an open-access platform before peer review. Preprints typically have a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which registers the research in the scientific record and enables others to easily cite it in their work. This method of quickly sharing research findings has added a new dimension to scientific progress.

Many researchers can’t share their work until their paper is finally published in a journal. This is because the entire process of scientific publishing is very time-consuming, sometimes taking months or even years. During this lengthy period, it is not possible to share the findings with others. However, by posting research papers in preprint archives, the research quickly reaches scientists around the world. As a result, researchers can receive valuable suggestions or feedback during the peer review process, which helps improve the quality of the work.

Through preprints, researchers can disseminate their work rapidly and effectively. There are three main advantages:

Credit: By publishing a research article as a preprint, a researcher can quickly receive recognition for their work. If any disputes arise in the future, preprints serve as a strong means to establish the timeline and originality of the research.

Feedback: In the traditional method, a submitted article usually receives input from only two or three reviewers through peer review. But with preprints, many researchers can see the paper at once. They can spot errors, suggest new data or lines of research, and even propose future collaborations. In this way, preprints help raise the quality of the research and make it stronger for the final publication.

Visibility and Citation: Preprints increase the visibility of research articles. According to a study by the Journal of the American Medical Association, posting a preprint significantly raises subsequent publication citations and Altmetric scores.

Most preprint platforms provide their services to researchers for free. If researchers desire extra features, some platforms, such as BioRxiv and MedRxiv, may charge a small fee. Here are some popular platforms for preprint publication:

1. arXiv: A popular platform used for physics, mathematics, and computer science.

2. bioRxiv: The primary preprint archive for biological research.

3. medRxiv: A specialized platform for health and medical research.

4. ChemRxiv: A well-known preprint archive for chemistry-related research.

5. SocArxiv: Suitable for sharing preprints in sociology, political science, and anthropology.

6. PsyArxiv: A prominent preprint archive for psychology and communication studies.

7. OSF: A versatile platform for sharing preprints in architecture, business, engineering, life sciences, physical sciences, arts, education, law, medicine, and social sciences.

Those who upload their research papers to preprint platforms can later submit them to any journal. In most cases, this is not considered duplicate publication. However, when submitting to a journal, researchers must mention the preprint’s DOI and update the preprint with a link to the final publication.
