Often, when submitting a research paper to a journal, you need to include a cover letter. This is a valuable opportunity to highlight the novelty and significance of your research, so the journal editor can understand why your work is suitable for their publication. In the cover letter, you must explain why your work is appropriate for their journal and why it will be of interest to their readers. When writing for publication, a well-crafted cover letter can help move your paper to the next stage of the manuscript submission process – that is, being sent for peer review. Therefore, it is worth taking the time to think carefully when writing your cover letter. Before you begin, check the Instructions for Authors (IFAs) of your target journal, as not all journals require a cover letter.
What should be included in a cover letter?
– The editor’s name (usually available on the journal’s online page).
– The title of your manuscript.
– The name of the journal to which you are submitting.
– A statement confirming that your paper has not been previously published and is not currently under consideration by any other journal.
– A summary of the research presented in your paper, its importance, and why you believe it will be relevant to the journal’s readers.
– Contact information for yourself and any co-authors.
– A confirmation that there are no conflicts of interest.
What to avoid in a cover letter
– Instead of simply rewriting your abstract in the cover letter, use your own words to clearly describe the importance of your research and why it is a good fit for the journal.
– Avoid using overly complex words or abbreviations; keep the language simple and understandable.
– Do not include excessive details in the cover letter; keep it to one page so the main message can be easily understood at first glance.
– Avoid any spelling or grammatical errors and thoroughly proofread your cover letter before submitting.
