10 Important Steps to Writing a Research Article for New Researchers

Writing a research article does not depend solely on data collection or writing skills; rather, it is a disciplined and strategic process. Therefore, knowing the subject alone is not enough to write a strong research article—you must also ensure the correct structure, appropriate sources, concrete arguments, and relevant information are presented. The following ten steps can be followed for a successful research article—

1. Become Familiar with the Subject and Determine Relevant Sections

Before starting research, you need to have a clear understanding of the topic. First, identify what your teacher, research supervisor, or journal expects from you. Many researchers skip this step, which increases the risk of article rejection by journals. If your research is intended for journal publication, determine your target journal early on. Each journal has its own guidelines, and knowing them in advance will make it easier to plan your research.

2. Start Your Research

After selecting a specific topic to write about, the next step is to gather information on that topic. According to the purpose of your research, collect information from relevant research articles, books, journals, internet resources, and other trustworthy sources. Once you have collected the information, analyze and verify which pieces are truly important and necessary for fulfilling your research objectives. Always focus on your goals and research questions, and collect and analyze information accordingly.

3. Organize Your Research

Data collection is an important part of writing a research article, but simply collecting information is insufficient. The collected information needs to be organized so that you can easily use it later. Firstly, it is crucial to create accurate references for all sources you gather information from. These references will serve as correct sources in your article. For example, if you use information from a book, research article, or the internet, be sure to note the correct title, author, publication year, and so on. Secondly, analyze how the collected information relates to the main topic of your research. Additionally, different tools can be used for organizing information, such as Excel, mind mapping software, reference management tools (e.g., Mendeley, Zotero), and so on.

4. Develop the Main Statement

The most important part of writing a research article is creating the thesis statement or main argument. A thesis statement represents the purpose or main idea of your research, clearly conveying the subject matter and goals. This essentially determines the structure of your article and helps present all arguments and evidence in your research. It should be a sentence that encapsulates the entire idea of your research and the question you seek to answer, making it clear for readers. The thesis statement should be concise yet informative enough to help readers understand your main message.

5. Determine the Structure of the Research Article

After developing a specific thesis statement, the next important step is to determine the structure of your research article. While writing the paper, the structure should be arranged so readers can easily follow your work and transition from the summary to detailed discussions. To create the article’s structure, begin with an outline based on your topic. An outline helps you logically arrange the main sections and allows you to plan each writing step precisely. When creating the structure, start with the introduction, research background, problem statement, research objectives, and thesis statement. Then, in the main section, present various aspects of the research, the collected data, and analyses. In the final part, include the conclusion, limitations of the research, and recommendations for future studies. Keep in mind, there is no rigid formula for a research article’s structure. When determining the structure, special attention should be given to the purpose of the research and the reader’s comprehension.

6. Choose Keywords

Keywords are very important for increasing the visibility of your article and making it easily discoverable online. Select keywords for your research article that accurately represent the core subject matter. When choosing keywords, focus on popular and relevant terms.

7. Write the First Draft

Once you finalize your structure, start writing the first draft. Do not consider the first draft as the final version. Focus on presenting your arguments coherently and clearly. The writing style should make the main points of your research easy to understand.

8. Edit and Revise

After completing the initial draft, read it yourself and see where improvements can be made. Correct any language errors, inconsistencies in arguments, or irrelevant information. If necessary, seek help from colleagues or your research supervisor. Editing and proofreading are essential to make the article publishable.

9. Final Review

The final review of your research article is extremely important. Once the final draft is ready, read it several times and ensure the main research questions are clearly answered. Multiple reviews help minimize mistakes.

10. Submit Following Guidelines

Before submitting the article, make sure you have followed the specified guidelines. Check whether the research information is presented accurately and the citations are provided properly. If possible, seek help from an experienced researcher or professional editor.
