Certain specific terminologies are used in research paper writing and publication, which researchers must know. Having a proper understanding of these terms is essential for correctly preparing a research paper and for publishing it in international journals.

1. Main Sections of a Research Paper

Title

The Title concisely presents the main content of the research. It must be brief, catchy, informative, and relevant to the study. The title should be chosen in such a way that it clearly conveys the core theme of the research and piques the reader’s interest.

Abstract

The abstract briefly presents the purpose, methods, key findings, and conclusions of the research. It is generally limited to 150–300 words and summarizes the essence of the study. Many readers and researchers read the abstract before proceeding to the main part of the paper, so it needs to be concise yet informative.

Keywords

Certain words or phrases are used to express the main subject areas of the research, which help search engines and research databases locate the paper. Selecting appropriate keywords increases the visibility of the article.

Introduction

The introduction explains the background of the research, a brief review of previous studies, the necessity of the research, and its objectives. It describes why this research is needed and what new knowledge or contribution it will bring.

Literature Review

This section provides a concise review of previous research. It identifies the research gap and explains the rationale for the new study.

Research Methods

This section describes in detail the materials used, study design, data collection techniques, and methods for statistical analysis. It ensures the reproducibility of the research, so that other researchers can achieve the same results by following the same methods.

Results

The main findings and analyses are presented using tables, graphs, or statistical analysis.

Discussion

This section analyzes the interpretation of research results, comparison with previous studies, limitations, and future possibilities of the research. It conveys the meaningful interpretation and impact of the study.

Conclusion

This section mentions the summary of the research, key findings, and recommendations for future studies.

References

All sources used in the research are cited here following a specific citation style (such as APA, MLA, IEEE). This ensures the integrity and credibility of the research.

2. Terminology of Research Paper Publication

Peer Review

To ensure the quality and reliability of research, a paper is reviewed by subject-matter experts before publication.

Impact Factor

This is a metric for determining the quality of a journal, calculated based on the number of citations received by research published in that journal.

H-Index

An index to measure a researcher’s impact based on the number of publications and their citations.

Digital Object Identifier

A unique number assigned to each research paper, which helps to easily locate the article.

Plagiarism

Using someone else’s research or writing without permission or proper citation. This violates research ethics and is considered a serious offense.

Citation

Mentioning the sources of all information used in the research paper.

Self-Citation

Citing one’s own previously published research work.

Science Citation Index Expanded

A database indexing high-quality scientific and technological research papers.

Scopus

A large research database that archives various high-quality research papers.

Predatory Journals

Low-quality or fake journals that publish research papers for a fee without a proper peer review process.

Preprint

The version of a research paper openly shared prior to being peer reviewed.

Corresponding Author

The main responsible person for the paper, who communicates with editors and reviewers and provides research-related information.

Open Access

In this publication model, research papers are freely accessible to readers.

Subscription

To read such research papers, one needs to pay or subscribe to the journal.

Single-blind Review

The names of the reviewers are not disclosed to the authors.

Double-blind Review

Both the authors and the reviewers remain anonymous to each other in this process.

Manuscript

The draft version of a research paper, submitted for publication.

Author Guidelines

The specific rules of the journal that must be followed when submitting a research paper.

Ethical Approval

Approval from the relevant committee is required when research involves humans or animals.

Data Sharing

Publicly sharing research data so that other researchers can verify or use it with permission.

Reproducibility

The possibility that other researchers can obtain the same results by following the same methods.

Postprint

The version created after peer review, just before the final stage of publication.

Publication

When the final version of a research paper is published in a journal, this is called publication. It can be in print or online.

Accepted

When a research paper successfully passes peer review and receives final approval for publication, it is said to be accepted.

Proofreading

The process of correcting language errors, spelling mistakes, and structural flaws before publication is known as proofreading. It ensures the linguistic accuracy and readability of the research.

Online

Many journals first publish their research papers online. This is known as “Online First,” where the paper is made available to readers before the print version is released.

Volume

A set of journal issues published over a specific period, usually counted annually.

Issue

The individual publications within a specified volume are called issues.

Page Number

Indicates on which page of the journal the research paper has been published.

Erratum

Correction of errors in a published research paper.

Retraction

Withdrawal of a published research paper due to a serious error, plagiarism, or ethical violation.
