These days, we often hear about various researchers having their research papers retracted. Often, upon hearing such news, we assume that all authors of the paper are dishonest or fraudulent. However, the reality is that a research paper typically involves multiple researchers, and sometimes one or two researchers’ unethical actions can lead to the entire paper being retracted. This also tarnishes the reputation of innocent authors. Therefore, it is not right to judge all researchers as guilty just because of a retraction.

Before collaborating with anyone in research, it is extremely important to check the concerned researcher’s previous work. The first thing to look for is whether any of their papers have been retracted before. If so, it is essential to find out the reason for the retraction. If it was due to unintentional errors, such as methodological mistakes or technological limitations, that is a different issue. But if it was for unethical reasons like data fabrication, plagiarism, or image manipulation, then collaborating with that researcher is definitely not safe.

To make this verification process easier, in September 2024, a technology startup called Scitility launched a tool named Argos. For the first time, this tool allows open access to researchers’ retraction histories. The Argos tool gathers data from reliable sources like the Retraction Watch Database and Crossref. By simply entering a researcher’s name or a specific article’s DOI number, you can automatically see the researcher’s retraction history, paper details, publisher, and the reasons for retraction. Anyone can log in to this site for free at any time to find information about any author.

By using this tool, it becomes very easy to determine whether the allegations against a researcher are due to unintentional errors or deliberate fraud. This helps ensure research quality and protects your own career from future blemishes. Before collaborating in research, it is highly recommended to use the Argos tool to check the researcher’s retraction history. This will help maintain both the quality of research and scientific integrity.
