A review article is a research paper that provides a critical and constructive analysis of existing research. It includes previously published studies, theoretical contributions, and methodological analyses. Review articles do not generally present new research findings; rather, they offer a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge on a topic, based on completed research. In contrast to primary research articles, review articles are considered secondary literature. This means that review articles do not usually present new data from the author’s own experimental work, but instead analyze or explain primary research on a specific subject.

1. Literature Review

A literature review presents existing knowledge on a specific topic, including substantive findings as well as theoretical and methodological contributions. It typically discusses the current state of affairs and ongoing research, establishing connections between different studies. This type of review combines relevant research, theories, methods, and analyses to thoroughly cover the subject. The goal of a literature review is to provide a consolidated understanding of a specific topic, helping relevant researchers form a background and context for future research.

2. Systematic Review

A systematic review evaluates and synthesizes all empirical evidence that meets predefined eligibility criteria to answer a specific research question. It is conducted in a methodical, well-organized, and transparent manner, aiming to minimize bias and yield more reliable results. In this type of review, researchers collect all relevant studies, assess their quality, and combine their findings to answer a clear and specific question. The purpose of a systematic review is to eliminate any uncertainty and produce reliable, reproducible results that can inform decision-making.

3. Meta-analysis

Meta-analysis is a quantitative, formal, and epidemiological study design that systematically evaluates the results of previous research and attempts to draw conclusions based on those studies. In a meta-analysis, data from multiple studies are combined to reach a strong, quantitatively-based conclusion. Typically, meta-analyses are conducted on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or other specific study designs, providing accurate and reliable results. By aggregating multiple study outcomes, meta-analysis can generate a robust, general conclusion about a particular topic—offering information that is more credible and extensive than that from individual primary studies.
