What will tomorrow’s electronics look like? In short—smaller and more powerful. Professor Sayeef Salahuddin of the University of California, Berkeley is at the forefront of this transformation. His research is focused on microcapacitors and high-density energy storage technology, enabling electronic devices to become even more compact and efficient.

Microcapacitors and On-Chip Energy Storage

Professor Salahuddin’s microcapacitor technology has revolutionized the delivery of high energy density. This advancement is enhancing on-chip energy storage capabilities, reducing dependency on bulky external power sources. As a result, it is paving the way for creating smaller and more powerful devices.

Potential Applications of This Research:

Implantable Bioelectronics: Will enhance the performance of medical wearable and implantable devices.

Edge Computing: Enables faster data processing with low power consumption.

Micro Robotics: Improves the efficiency of power storage and usage in miniature robots.

2025 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award

Professor Sayeef Salahuddin has been selected for the 2025 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award. He received this recognition for his pioneering research in ferroelectrics physics and integrated ferroelectric devices. However, he has not yet formally received the award.

In 2008, he invented Negative Capacitance (NC) technology, which propelled the integration of ferroelectric materials into CMOS technology to a revolutionary new level. The results from this research are now playing a vital role in the development of today’s advanced transistors, DRAM capacitors, and capacitive energy storage solutions.

In 2017, he founded the Berkeley Center for Negative Capacitance Technology, which plays a crucial role in facilitating research exchange with the industry. Due to his influence, major tech companies are now integrating ferroelectric materials into CMOS manufacturing, opening up new horizons in semiconductor technology.

Professor Sayeef Salahuddin is currently a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley.

Congratulations to Professor Sayeef Salahuddin on this remarkable achievement! His research will help make the future of electronics more efficient, compact, and powerful.
