Most of the time, we expand our knowledge based on common beliefs. However, the way we perceive things may not always align with scientific perspectives. The topics of science are not always easy to grasp. Similarly, we often believe that lightning occurs due to the collision of clouds. This is a widely held misconception that needs to be corrected.

What is lightning? First, there is a flash of light (electricity), followed by a loud noise. This is called lightning. The sound can be almost deafening, and if the lightning strikes nearby, it can even cause death. So how does lightning happen? In truth, clouds contain tiny water droplets. As they rise, the amount of water increases. When the amount of water exceeds 5 mm, the water molecules can no longer hold together. As a result, they gradually separate from each other, which causes the formation of electrical charges. The value of this charge is higher in the upper part than in the lower part of the cloud. Notably, the upper part becomes positively charged and the lower part negatively charged. This is why electrical charges are discharged from the top to the bottom. As a result, we first see a flash of light. During this process, the expansion and contraction of air produces the thunderous sound we hear.
What to Do During Lightning:
a. Do not take shelter under any tree, as trees are more likely to be struck by lightning.
b. Stay away from water.
c. Do not stay on a bicycle or motorcycle on the road.
d. Instead, it is wise to take shelter in a safe place.
e. During lightning, it is best to avoid using all electronic devices and disconnect electrical lines.
f. Avoid touching a person struck by lightning with bare hands.
