An AI scam is a type of online fraud that is carried out using artificial intelligence. The two most common types are voice cloning and deepfakes.
- Voice Cloning: In this scam, fraudsters use AI to imitate the voice of someone you know. For example, a mother receives a phone call where she believes her daughter has been kidnapped, but it was actually an AI-generated voice clone trying to scam her.
- Deepfake Scams: Videos are created using AI that look and sound completely real. For example, a video might show a famous person falsely endorsing a scam product, making it appear credible even though it isn’t true. Such fake and fabricated videos are made to convince people.
How to Protect Yourself
1. Be cautious with calls from unknown numbers: If you receive a call from an unfamiliar or international number, be cautious as it may be a scam attempt.
2. Ask personal questions: Scammers cannot clone personal information or memories. If the caller can’t answer simple personal questions, it’s a sign of a scam.
3. Short, emotional messages: Scammers usually use brief and emotional messages to get you to react quickly, leaving you no time to verify.
4. Requests for payment via cryptocurrency or gift cards: These are favorite methods of scammers since it’s very difficult to trace the recipient.
5. Keyword system: Set up a secret keyword with your family members or friends that only you know.
6. Lock your social media profiles: Keep your social media profiles private so scammers cannot collect your personal information.
Additional Security Measures
- Use multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Use complex and unique passwords.
- Install cybersecurity software.
As AI technology rapidly advances, scammers are becoming more creative, so it’s very important to always stay vigilant to protect yourself.
