“To draw international attention to the hardships faced by Bangladesh’s golden fiber and the difficult life of the local fishing community, Corentin de Chatel set out from Kuakata, Patuakhali, by sea in his self-made boat on February 16, heading towards France. On August 17, 2010, he safely reached La Ciotat, France.”
In Corentin’s words
“I am making this journey to highlight the problems facing Bangladeshi fishermen, for whom the sea is becoming increasingly dangerous due to global warming,”
” [1]
His boat, made of 60% fiberglass and 40% jute, is 27 feet long. The boat is named Tara Tari [2]. French engineer Marc Van Peteghem built it right here in Bangladesh.
It is claimed that this is the first sea-going vessel made of jute to be used on such a voyage. Equipped with GPS and advanced instruments, the construction of this boat cost $10,000.
