1. Weakness in communication. Scoring well in the TOEFL exam and having good communication skills are different matters. Additionally, it takes time to get used to the variations in American English.
2. Adjusting to the study methods. In America, there are assignments, quizzes, exams, reviews, and presentations throughout the semester.
3. Lack of experience working as a teaching assistant.
4. Not being accustomed to weekly planning and working according to a routine.
5. Limited access to native food and managing one’s own cooking.
6. Lack of public transportation.
7. Not having free-writing or paraphrasing skills. That is, struggling to write using one’s own words.
8. Difficulty with troubleshooting in research and failing to propose new ideas for one’s own research. Being overly dependent on the supervisor.
