In the early twentieth century, on a rainy day, the young scientist Marie Curie spent hours after hours in her laboratory. It was cold outside, and in a dark room inside she kept running experiments by a small beam of light—experiments that one day led humanity to discover a new element: radium. For this research, Marie Curie and her husband Pierre Curie refined two tons of mineral material, from which only 1.1 grams of pure radium was produced. From two tons to a single gram—it’s staggering to think about, but it is from such ‘madness’ that groundbreaking discoveries arise.

So, why do scientists work so tirelessly, spending days, months, and even years in search of the tiniest sliver of data? What draws them to research so powerfully that it binds them for a lifetime?

To understand the mindset of scientists, we must first recognize their innate curiosity. They are always eager to know more. As Albert Einstein said, “I am not particularly talented, I am only passionately curious.” It is this boundless curiosity that drives scientists down the long road of research.

In a 2015 survey by the U.S. National Science Foundation, it was found that 93 percent of scientists do their work primarily for the joy and excitement of discovering something new. Financial rewards or recognition are not their main driving force. This shows that scientists are not actually ‘crazy’; they value the joy of discovery—a joy often invisible to the ordinary eye.

Take another example. In 2012, thousands of scientists worked at the Large Hadron Collider in search of the Higgs boson. Their research spanned decades. Yet, the Higgs boson that was finally confirmed has a lifespan of less than a trillionth of a second. This minuscule data point was chased by a huge, relentless research effort. But this ‘tiny’ discovery opened doors to many of the mysteries of physics, enabling scientists to understand the structure of the universe more deeply.

The data obtained through research may not seem meaningful immediately, but when these little pieces of information come together, they paint a bigger picture. This is precisely what happened with the discovery of penicillin. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin by accident, through a mistake, in 1928. This small ‘mistake’ went on to save millions of lives. What once seemed like madness is now a cornerstone of modern medicine.

Another major reason for research among scientists is their sense of responsibility. They know that their work can bring positive change to society. Research accelerates the progress of human civilization and improves quality of life. According to a 2020 World Bank report, research and innovation have at least doubled global economic growth over the past five decades. In other words, scientists are the silent architects behind society’s ongoing development.

However, scientists do not just research for data or results; they seek truth and beauty. In the words of renowned physicist Richard Feynman, “Science is a way of enjoying the beauty of nature.” The intense desire to seek out this beauty is what propels them toward new and unknown paths.

In the end, scientists are not truly mad; rather, they are devoted to an ideal—one where there is freedom to question, courage to seek the unknown, and tireless effort to reveal the truth. This fervor gives humanity knowledge, strength, and the courage to move forward.

Do you want to be one of these ‘crazy’ ones too?
