What Are Journal Quartiles and Journal Rankings?

Journal Quartile (Q) Ranking is a statistical method for determining the qualitative value of a publication. It is also known as a parameter of journal ranking. This ranking system is divided into four quartiles—Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4—based on the quality of research. The main criteria for this ranking are Impact Factor (IF), Citation, and the indexing of a particular journal.

Quartile ranking is determined according to the specific subject category of each journal, and it indicates in which quartile a journal falls based on its impact factor. The quartile rank is calculated by using the impact factors or other quality indicators of journals in a category and ranking them accordingly. This ranking system measures what percentage of journals are included in each category.

Different Quartile Categories:

Q1: Top 25% journals.

Q2: Journals ranked from the top 25% to 50% after Q1.

Q3: Journals ranked from 50% to 75% after Q2.

Q4: The last or lowest 25% of journals (from 75% to 100%).

Method for Determining Quartile Ranking:

Q1: 0% < Z ≤ 25%—the highest ranked journals in a category

Q2: 25% < Z ≤ 50%

Q3: 50% < Z ≤ 75%

Q4: 75% < Z—the lowest ranked journals in a category

Formula for Determining Z:

Z = (X/Y)

X = Position of the journal based on impact factor within a specific category

Y = Total number of journals in that category

Example:

If a journal is ranked 70th out of 300 journals in a specific category based on the impact factor, then Z = (70/300) = 0.233 (23.3%), which is a Q1 journal.

If a journal is ranked 102nd out of 204 journals in a particular category based on the impact factor, then Z = (102/204) = 0.5 (50%), which is a Q2 journal.
