It’s almost 3 a.m. In a small university room, researcher Sadia Rahman sits in front of her monitor. She keeps stumbling while trying to write the introduction of her research paper. Pressed for time, she suddenly turns to the artificial intelligence known as ChatGPT. After inputting a few instructions and waiting briefly, a coherent introduction appears on her screen. Somewhat surprised and somewhat cautious, she wonders, “Are machines now our assistants in research?”
The use of ChatGPT in research is increasing worldwide. In a recent publication in the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Dr. Som S. Biswas described in detail the steps of research aided by ChatGPT in his article. He states, “ChatGPT can enhance researchers’ productivity, but its limitations and ethical considerations must be taken into account.”¹
Professor Dr. Mahbubur Rahman, Director of the Institute of Information Technology at the University of Dhaka, says, “Using ChatGPT in research can save time, but relying entirely on it is a mistake. To preserve originality in research, a researcher’s own creativity is essential.”
How Does ChatGPT Assist in Research?
ChatGPT is capable of assisting at various stages of research. It can:
- Generate titles and summaries: Helps make research titles and summaries more attractive and relevant.²
- Assist with introductions and discussions: Can craft clear introductions by highlighting the main topics of the research.³
- Support in determining methodology: Can provide ideas and guidelines for setting research methods.¹
However, despite all these advantages, there are some limitations to using ChatGPT in research. It is important to remain cautious when utilizing it:
- Possibility of bias: The data used in ChatGPT can sometimes be biased, which may compromise the objectivity of research.⁴
- Lack of recent information: Due to limitations in ChatGPT’s data, the latest research findings may not be available.³
- Risk of plagiarism: Occasionally, ChatGPT might reproduce existing information verbatim, which can lead to plagiarism.¹
Ethics of Using ChatGPT in Research
Renowned science writer and technologist Professor Dr. Muhammed Zafar Iqbal says, “We must be careful in the use of technology. The use of ChatGPT in research must be acknowledged, and any information created with its assistance must always be verified.”
Some important guidelines for researchers:
- The use of ChatGPT must be explicitly mentioned in research papers.⁵
- Information prepared in ChatGPT must be checked and edited.¹
- The core parts of the research—such as data collection and analysis—must always be original.⁶
Research in the Future: Human and Machine Collaboration
The famous physicist Stephen Hawking once said, “Technology has made our lives easier, but it is important to use it cautiously.” ChatGPT and other AI technologies will play a significant role in the future of research as well. However, it will remain the researchers’ core responsibility to ensure ethics, transparency, and originality in their work.
For young researchers like Sadia, technology is certainly a blessing, but only responsible use will pave the way for true advancement in research.
