Author or ‘Invisible Worker’?—Young Researchers Losing Recognition in Studies

A summer afternoon at the University of Dhaka. Master’s student Rashed is sipping hot tea in the campus canteen. Suddenly, he pauses his pen on his notebook, his face reflecting a hint of sorrow. A friend asks, “What’s on your mind?”

Rashed sighs, “I worked day and night on the project for six months, but my name isn’t on the author list! Is this fair?”

Rashed’s story is not unique in the world of research. Thousands of young researchers experience the same frustration. Even experts are questioning what the true criteria for authorship should be.

🎓 Authorship: Not Just Recognition, But Responsibility

Authorship plays a crucial role in a researcher’s honor, recognition, and career development. However, with this honor comes responsibility. The internationally recognized International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) has set four criteria for being recognized as an author:

  1. Making significant contributions to the conception, design, or data analysis of the research;
  2. Drafting or critically reviewing the manuscript;
  3. Approving the final version to be published;
  4. Being accountable for any questions or criticisms of the research.

🗣️ “When my name isn’t there, I feel invisible!”

Sohan, a researcher from Rajshahi University, shares, “I worked on the surveys, data analysis, even drafting the manuscript. Yet, my name ended up just in the acknowledgements.” Many young researchers like him fall victim to disappointment over authorship.

Distinguished educator Dr. Munir Hasan says, “Adding someone’s name just because they funded the research or are senior is unethical. Authorship must depend on actual contribution to the work.”

📊 Authorship Order: Who Comes First, Who Comes Last?

Usually, the person who did most of the core work becomes the first author. The last author is often the supervisor or research director. The order in between is determined by the level of contribution. However, there are still many misunderstandings about this topic. Dr. Liena Roth, a researcher at Humboldt University in Germany, says, “If the order of authorship isn’t clear, it can undermine the credibility of the research itself.”

📚 Global and Ethical Realities

Ghost authorship (someone who contributed but isn’t named) and gift authorship (being named without contribution) are major ethical issues in research. A survey by Elsevier found that about 13 percent of research papers experience this. As a result, rules have been set up to state authors’ contributions clearly. The need for this is now felt in Bangladesh as well. Researchers are calling for transparency, accountability, and fairness in research policies.

Advance Discussion is Key to Avoiding Problems

Starting discussions about authorship from the beginning of a research project can prevent future misunderstandings. Professor Nazneen Akhtar says, “We set everyone’s roles clearly at the start of our research. It motivates newcomers and seniors feel more at ease as well.”

🧾 Final Word: Contributions Should Be Judged Fairly

Research is a collaborative effort. Therefore, both names and contributions should be recognized in a fair and transparent way. For authors, it’s both a mark of honor and a measure of research quality.
