Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our lives. Modern technologies like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are now among the main tools for increasing speed and efficiency at work. However, a recent study has revealed that women are significantly lagging behind men in the use of AI technologies. This is not just a Bangladeshi problem, but a global issue, the consequences of which can have long-lasting effects on the economy and society.

Recently, researchers from the University of Chicago in the United States and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark conducted a survey of 100,000 workers in Denmark and found that even within the same company and in similar types of jobs, women use ChatGPT nearly 20% less than men. Even within the same organization, this gap is clearly visible. The study showed that men typically use AI more for coding or solving complex technical problems, whereas women mainly use AI for composition, communication, and document editing.

This scenario is even more worrying for Bangladesh. Many female workers in our country are employed in professions that are at higher risk of automation. Especially jobs like garments, data entry, and customer service are at risk of disappearing due to automation. Falling behind in technological proficiency means women will fall even further behind in the future job market. According to a World Bank report, Bangladeshi women lag 25% behind men in basic digital skills.

Why this disparity? One of the main reasons is the lack of opportunity and specific guidance for women to get started with AI. New technologies evolve rapidly, and keeping up requires sufficient time and training. But women often spend more time on family, childcare, and unpaid household work, making it harder for them to find the time.

In addition, certain social and cultural perceptions hold women back in technology. The belief that “women are weak in technology” creates a lack of confidence. In the workplace, female employees often do not receive the necessary support and training. Sometimes, women are not encouraged to use AI, or their opinions are not valued.

This gap is not just harmful for individual women—its impact is far-reaching. Currently, women make up less than 30% of the global AI workforce. As a result, the technology that will shape our future is mainly being developed from a male perspective. If this continues, AI bias will only increase, leading to even greater discrimination against women in job opportunities, healthcare, and economic services.

So how can this gap be bridged? A multifaceted approach is needed. AI and digital literacy for women must be ensured from school and college levels. Special training, mentorship programs, and inclusive environments should be created in workplaces for women. Raising social awareness and eliminating stereotypes is also essential.

Additionally, dedicated platforms should be created for women, where they can learn to use AI in a comfortable and friendly environment. For example, the Amplify platform could be a promising initiative designed for women. Such platforms would provide flexible learning, community support, and career development guidance.

Above all, making the path to AI education easier for women is a crucial investment. This is because only through diversity can artificial intelligence become truly humane and suitable for everyone. For the success of Bangladesh’s sustainable development and digital transformation, it is vital to bring everyone—regardless of gender—into the center of AI technology.
