Richard Sutton and Andrew Barto, this year’s recipients of the Turing Award—considered the highest honor in computer science—have recently issued an important warning. According to them, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has now reached a point where it is spinning out of control. As the fathers of reinforcement learning in AI research, their concerns have caused a stir in the tech world.

Reinforcement learning is an important branch of AI that has played a revolutionary role in technological progress. Currently, this method underpins groundbreaking technologies ranging from Google’s AlphaGo to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. They voiced this warning upon receiving the Turing Award—widely considered the “Nobel Prize of computing.”

During the award ceremony, Andrew Barto stated, “AI technology is advancing so fast that safety concerns are falling behind. Whenever competitive advantages are prioritized over public safety, we need to rethink our approach.”

Co-recipient Richard Sutton echoed the sentiment, saying, “If we do not emphasize safety in step with rapid technological development, it could lead to major risks in the future.”

Other AI experts also agree with their statements. Turing Award winner Geoffrey Hinton has previously expressed such concerns. He said, “AI is a system whose behavior we cannot fully control. This could pose significant risks for humanity.”

This concern is also widely reflected among everyday tech users. According to a recent survey, nearly 72 percent of people believe that it is crucial to regulate the pace of AI technology’s advancement.

Renowned AI researcher Yoshua Bengio also commented, “Now is the time to give the utmost importance to ethical issues in AI technology. We must consider not only business success, but also the ethical and social dimensions of technology equally.”

AI companies are now facing this challenge. The concerns voiced by experts are an important message to tech organizations: In developing AI, priority must be given not to speed, but to safety, ethics, and caution above all else.
