Breakthrough in Certified Random Number Generation with Quantum Computers

Recently, scientists have achieved a groundbreaking success using a quantum computer named Quantinuum—they have, for the first time, succeeded in generating certified random numbers, marking a major milestone in modern cyber security.

How Was This Achieved?

The researchers created these random numbers using the 56-qubit Quantinuum trapped-ion quantum computer, where ions or charged atoms are controlled and utilized via electric and magnetic fields. Subsequently, the classical supercomputers at Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories in the United States verified that these numbers are truly unpredictable and genuinely random.

Why Is This Important?

Random numbers play a crucial role in our everyday digital lives—for example, in generating bank OTPs (One Time Passwords) for secure online transactions, or in controlling user access to secure computer systems. They are essential for encryption, secure passwords, simulations, and more. However, classical computers typically produce pseudo-random numbers—like lottery numbers generated using a specific algorithm, which may appear random but are internally predetermined. In contrast, true random numbers arise from events dictated by nature—such as the spontaneous decay of an atom—which are completely unpredictable and, if not truly random, could be risky from a security standpoint. Since numbers generated through quantum methods are truly random, they can serve as the basis for even stronger and more secure cyber security systems.

Future Impact

This technology can be used in the future to generate secure encryption keys—such as for password encryption in banking applications or protecting citizen data stored in government databases—ensuring security of economic transactions, and enhancing privacy protection. It is also being considered as one of the first practical applications of quantum computers.

This innovation is a major step towards transforming quantum computing from a laboratory pursuit into a practical part of real-world security systems. However, in the future, challenges such as machine stability, high costs, and the ability to scale for practical use will need to be addressed for wider implementation.
