🌟 Three Invisible Traps in the PhD Journey: My Personal Experience

The experience of pursuing a PhD is much like running a long marathon. To reach the destination, hard work alone is not enough—you need strategy, companions, and the ability to sustain your inner strength. During my own research journey, I worked with three different supervisors. Each helped me in their own way, but no one warned me about one crucial thing—three traps that almost derailed my entire project. Today I want to share those experiences, so young researchers don’t fall into the same mistakes.

1️⃣ Lack of Planning — The First and Most Dangerous Trap

At the beginning of my research, I was bursting with enthusiasm. I worked from morning till night, but there was no organized blueprint in my work. It felt like being busy was the same as being productive. One day, I found myself with countless filled notebooks, dozens of sets of experimental data, but no cohesive structure tying it all together.

Amidst this chaos, I realized that effort without planning only gets scattered. Research no longer progresses—instead, you get tangled in your own web.

Solution:
You need to build your research like an architect.

  • Break large tasks into smaller steps
  • Set weekly goals
  • Monitor monthly progress
  • Treat each step as a milestone

Once I developed this habit, everything changed. The chaos lifted, and my research gained a clear roadmap.

2️⃣ Isolation — The Silent Enemy of a Researcher’s Life

Many people believe research is a solitary struggle. I used to think so, too. But I quickly realized that isolation narrows your perspective. New ideas stop coming, you can’t find alternative methods, and eventually, you start doubting yourself—letting despair take over.

Solution:
I consciously began building a network—

  • Participated in online seminars
  • Connected with researchers on LinkedIn
  • Worked on small collaborative projects

These connections opened up new horizons in my research. Seeing your work through others’ eyes means discovering yourself in a new mirror.

3️⃣ Ignoring Mental and Physical Fatigue — Battling Yourself

I believed that the more hours I worked, the more successful I would be. Staying up late analyzing data, starting again at dawn—that was my routine. But the result was the opposite—

  • I lost focus
  • Mistakes increased
  • Productivity dropped almost to zero

That’s when I learned, the first condition for sustaining research is to take care of yourself.

  • Regular breaks
  • Walking
  • Adequate sleep

When I prioritized sleep, a few morning hours yielded twice as much work as before. Rest is not a luxury; it is an essential pillar of scientific productivity.

Final Thoughts: A PhD Is More Than a Degree—It’s a Way of Life

Looking back now, I realize a successful PhD is not limited to submitting a research paper. It builds a way of life—

  • Proper planning brings discipline to your work
  • Networking broadens your vision
  • Self-care ensures your long-term endurance

Even though the research environment in Bangladesh often lacks infrastructure and proper supervision, these three habits can become your main tools for success. To make it on the international stage, you need not only talent but the right habits and lasting mental strength.

A researcher who can avoid these three traps doesn’t just submit a thesis—they build a strong foundation that will support their entire future career.
