From the Laboratory to Society

One of the biggest questions in research today—both in Bangladesh and globally—is: are we merely acquiring knowledge, or is that knowledge truly bringing about change in society? Every day, countless studies are conducted in the laboratories of universities and research institutions. But to what extent are the results of that research reflected in society, and how much is being transformed into new technologies, medical treatments, or sustainable solutions? This has become the central point of discussion.

At a recent seminar in Japan, it was made clear that a researcher’s responsibility does not end with publishing papers. Creating positive social impact and generating economic or cultural value—these should also be goals for researchers. When research remains confined to the pages of books or journals, its full potential is not realized. The true success of research lies in opening new doors of possibility for society.

Japan’s example teaches us a lot. After universities there were transformed into independent entities, emphasis was placed on channeling research outcomes toward creating social impact. Instead of relying solely on industry, an environment was created where new startups, new technologies, and even new industries could emerge directly from universities. This model is gradually becoming a topic of discussion in Bangladesh and other countries as well.

We see that Japan’s once-powerful industrial giants have now fallen behind in today’s technology race. In contrast, in places like the United States, university-based initiatives gave birth to Google, Facebook, and even modern biotech companies. This synergy between research and business has brought significant changes to their economy and society. The question is: can our country create a path in which young university researchers move beyond just writing papers and become entrepreneurs of real-world innovations?

It is crucial to understand a fundamental difference here. Science always moves towards the pursuit of truth, but business seeks practical application. On one hand, researchers produce refined data for journal publication, while on the other, investors or entrepreneurs look for evidence that can quickly deliver results. Bridging the gap between these two worlds is the greatest challenge of our era. And this could open a new horizon for young researchers.

The issue is even more significant in the context of Bangladesh. Our universities are engaged in numerous studies—in agriculture, health, information technology, and the environment—generating new knowledge everywhere. But how much of this reaches industry, society, or people’s everyday lives? Here lies our shortfall. If research outcomes do not reach farmers’ fields, hospital beds, or students’ hands, they remain confined to paper.

Young researchers must remember that society’s problems are their greatest field of inquiry. Climate change, urban health, education, or food security—these are not abstract issues. They are part of our daily reality. Real social impact from research will be achieved only when laboratory ideas are transformed into solutions for these real-world problems.

Therefore, today’s researchers need a multidimensional mindset. They must publish high-quality papers while also thinking about how their research can have practical societal impact. This requires building networks, fostering an entrepreneurial spirit, and maintaining close relationships with industry and policymakers.

Bangladesh’s future progress will depend on this integrated mentality. If young researchers can connect their work to social challenges from the outset, we will soon witness new initiatives, fresh solutions, and social transformation emerging from our universities.

Ultimately, the success of research is not confined within laboratory walls. True achievement lies in spreading light in society, improving the quality of life, and creating a sustainable foundation for future generations. For Bangladesh’s young researchers, this could be a new calling—a call to transform science into a force for society.
