Scientific progress is usually measured by new discoveries, research publications, or technological achievements. But from the perspective of an experienced scientist, there is a deeper and more enduring accomplishment—developing the next generation of researchers. For Dr. Mohammad Ataul Karim, this has been one of the main inspirations throughout his research career. In his words, “Alongside research, nurturing researchers is my greatest motivation.” This realization has guided the direction of his entire professional life.

In Dr. Karim’s experience, the outcome of a research project is often limited to a few publications or technological advances. But if a student or young researcher can grow through that process into a thoughtful, independent, and responsible scientist, the impact becomes far more enduring. He believes that the true success of research is only fulfilled when it can inspire and create future researchers. For this reason, he has not merely instructed students in his laboratory; rather, he has encouraged them to ask questions, allowed them to make mistakes, and created opportunities for learning from those mistakes.

Many of the students who have worked under his guidance now play important roles in various research labs, industries, and universities across the United States. Dr. Karim believes that when a teacher or researcher sees students only as assistants, their creativity does not flourish. But when students are viewed as partners in research, they themselves bring forth new ideas. Building this kind of partnership is the core of his educational philosophy.

Another crucial aspect of nurturing researchers is creating the right environment. Dr. Karim has worked behind establishing new research programs and departments at various universities, primarily for this reason. In his view, no matter how talented a student is, without the necessary infrastructure, supportive environment, and mentorship, that talent cannot fully blossom. Thus, building laboratories, securing funding, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration are all essential parts of the process of developing researchers.

This philosophy holds even greater significance in the context of Bangladesh. Many talented students are unable to realize their potential due to the lack of opportunities for higher education and research. According to Dr. Karim, if we can establish a culture of nurturing researchers alongside doing research, we will see positive changes in the country’s research environment as well. For this, new forms of teacher-student relationships are needed, where learning opportunities extend beyond the classroom to the laboratories.

Ultimately, the statement “Alongside research, nurturing researchers is my greatest motivation” reminds us that the greatest investment in scientific pursuit is, in fact, people. Research papers or patents may become outdated over time, but the curious mind and ethical perspective developed in a researcher continues to enlighten society for years to come.
