There is a common misconception among many students from our country: “It’s impossible to pursue higher studies abroad without a research paper.” One big reason for this is that many Facebook influencers or social media activists often claim that you cannot get a scholarship or go abroad without having research papers. Hearing these kinds of things leaves many students confused. But is that really the case?
The reality is, in most countries around the world, having a research paper is not mandatory for applying to master’s programs. In fact, even for many PhD or MS leading to PhD programs, scholarships can be awarded without research papers. I know quite a few people who didn’t have a single paper, yet after going abroad, they are now first authors on multiple research papers. Some have even published in top 5% ranked journals. Of course, having research papers is an advantage, but if you don’t have any, there’s no reason to lose hope.
In reality, learning research isn’t just about reading or writing academic papers. Learning research means identifying a specific problem, analyzing the underlying causes, learning how to collect and analyze data, and step by step, creating a valid outcome. And before grasping this entire process, the most important thing is having a solid understanding of the basics of your subject. If you’re not clear on the fundamental concepts of your field, succeeding in research becomes very challenging. Alongside, you must maintain a competitive CGPA, as it’s extremely important in scholarship competitions.
If your goal is higher studies abroad, whichever country you aim for, you’ll need IELTS or TOEFL. So, prepare well for IELTS/TOEFL/GRE alongside your academic studies, and aim for a good score. At the same time, try to learn a programming language (Python or R). Programming is crucial in today’s research.
Additionally, learning how to write an SOP (Statement of Purpose) and Personal Statement is very important, as these essays reflect your interests, goals, and future plans. Before applying, get a good grasp of how to email supervisors or professors. Along with professional emails, work on preparing a standard CV as well.
If possible, participate in various extra-curricular activities such as Olympiads, science fairs, debates, or social and volunteer work. These experiences will set your profile apart and also positively impact your SOP.
Another important aspect is building your network. Connecting with those already studying or working abroad, learning from and sharing experiences with them, will help you move forward in many ways. Sometimes, professors take new students in their lab based on referrals from their acquaintances. In such cases, if you have good connections and they refer you, your chances of success increase significantly.
To learn research, you need proper guidance and a suitable environment—which you’ll get once you go abroad. Because in foreign universities, the relationship between supervisors and students is professional. They will definitely guide you, as it’s part of their job. Your learning and success is their success as well.
So, for those who still don’t have any research papers, there’s no reason to be discouraged. Rather, now is the time to believe in yourself, develop a learning mindset, and use your time wisely and patiently. If you have these qualities, you’ll surely reach the place that might seem like just a dream right now.
