In this era of digitalization, when almost all public universities in Bangladesh—including even the newest institutions—are conducting their admissions using the latest technologies, Textile University remains stuck clinging to old, outdated methods.
While Shahjalal University of Science and Technology has introduced a simpler and more enjoyable admission process via mobile SMS, while Post Office Electronic Money Transfer Systems exist, and banking systems are integrated into the admission process at other universities, we simply do not understand the justification for still requiring manual application forms. It is hard to accept that Dr. Nitai Chandta Sutradhar, the respected current Vice Chancellor of Textile University, had implemented online admission processes for diploma engineering during his time as Director General of the Technical Education Board, and yet, even after nearly a year since the university was upgraded, has not been able to provide even a proper, comprehensive website for Textile University.
Barisal University, which is only a few days old, is conducting its admissions through mobile SMS. Similarly, new universities such as Pabna University of Science and Technology, the newly established Gopalganj University of Science and Technology, and Jessore University of Science and Technology are all using modern technology for their admission processes. But here, we are still dealing with paper forms, which must be collected and submitted in person. Perhaps, because Textile University is one of the country’s top autonomous universities, there is a need to maintain its uniqueness. In that case, we should have thought about introducing a new, technology-based and user-friendly admission process.
Another issue is the policy followed by Textile University regarding admission from the waiting list, which can only be described as an adamant policy. Forcing a student to travel from a remote area just to fill out a waiting form is nothing short of harassment. Here, the student suffers physically, mentally, and financially—all without any guarantee of admission. However, we hope that at least for this academic year, there will be a process to fill out the waiting form online.
