While we are somewhat familiar with Wi-Fi technology, WiMAX is still entirely new. WiMAX is often referred to as a hybrid of Wi-Fi because, unlike Wi-Fi, its network covers a much larger area and provides data transfer speeds much faster than 3G or Wi-Fi.
Nokia will be including a built-in WiMAX modem in its upcoming N series tablet PCs, which are expected to hit the market next year. This new Nokia tablet PC will feature the Linux operating system and Intel’s BroadPeak WiMAX chipset. Intel’s chipset will also support Centrino laptops. Early next year, Nokia’s WiMAX-enabled tablet PC will be available in the US market, where it can be used on the Sprint Nextel Corporation network. However, this product will not be released in other markets around the world immediately. Additionally, by the end of the year, WiMAX-enabled Centrino laptops from Acer, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Lenovo, and Asustek will be available on the market.
Currently, the Nokia N800 tablet PC (800 x 480) available in the market already supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which can work with cellular networks and connect to mobile phones.
