Recently, we interviewed Shammi Tahura. She is currently working as a Research Associate at the University of Iowa in the USA. She shared many important insights for our new generation of researchers. Read her full interview to learn more:
Could you please introduce yourself?
I completed my undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at BUET and then earned my Master’s in Theoretical Physics from Dhaka University in 2016. Later, I completed my Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Virginia, USA, in 2021. From 2021 to 2023, I worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Guelph in Canada. During the same period, I also worked as an Associate Postdoc at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Currently, I am a Research Associate at the University of Iowa, USA.
What is the focus of your research?
My work focuses on gravity. More precisely, I am a Gravitational Wave Astrophysicist. These waves are produced when two black holes or neutron stars orbit each other and eventually merge into a single black hole. By studying gravitational waves, I try to determine the properties of black holes and compare Einstein’s General Relativity with other modified or alternative theories of gravity. My work involves both data analysis and theoretical modeling. In some cases, I analytically compute what gravitational waves would look like in a specific theory. In other cases, I analyze data collected by detectors like LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA to see how it matches with the theories.
How does your research benefit us, or how could it in the future?
My work does not have any direct applications in everyday life. However, in the future, it could provide important information about the laws or origins of the universe.
Do you have any message for young students in Bangladesh who want to pursue a career in science?
If you want to pursue science, you always need to stay curious. Science is both exciting and challenging. To solve scientific problems, you often need to think out of the box and remain persistent. At the same time, you should be able to set goals and work according to a plan.

My work revolves around gravity. More specifically, I am a Gravitational Wave Astrophysicist. Gravitational waves are produced when two black holes or neutron stars orbit each other and eventually merge into a single black hole. Using these waves, I try to determine the characteristics of black holes and compare predictions of Einstein’s general theory of relativity with other alternative theories of gravity. My research involves both data analysis and theoretical work. In some cases, I analytically compute gravitational waves perturbations in a specific theory, while in others, I analyze the wave data collected by detectors like LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA to see how it aligns with different gravitational theories.
How does your research benefit us?
My work does not have a direct application in our daily lives. However, it holds the potential to provide crucial insights into the fundamental laws or origins of the universe.
