In today’s era of rapid technological advancement, high-speed data transmission has become a major challenge. For the development of virtual reality, gaming, and 5G and 6G technologies, we seek ever more effective and innovative technologies for high-speed data transmission. One of the leading solutions to meet this demand is “Radio Over Fiber” technology.

Rajibul Islam, Senior Manager at Ooredoo Qatar, has demonstrated through his research how this technology can be implemented effectively. His research primarily focuses on the potential for data transmission and practical use of millimeter-wave Radio Over Fiber. He began his professional journey in 2002 as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Gazipur. Later, in 2005, he went to South Korea under a government scholarship program and obtained his master’s degree in Radio Communication Engineering. After finishing his master’s in 2007, he moved to Australia to pursue his PhD at Melbourne University, specializing in Optical and Wireless Technology.

After completing his PhD, he worked at several international telecommunication companies, most notably National Broadband Network (NBN Co), where he served as an Advanced Technology Architect. His research mainly centered on the effectiveness and practical aspects of millimeter-wave data transmission via Radio Over Fiber technology.

How Radio Over Fiber Works?

Radio Over Fiber (RoF) technology is a method that enables high-speed data delivery by combining optical fiber and radio frequency technology. Data is sent from a central station through optical fiber and at the receiver end is wirelessly distributed as a radio signal. The use of optical fiber is due to its high bandwidth and low loss characteristics. Especially when working in the millimeter-wave range (such as 60 GHz), a lot of expensive equipment and complex systems are required.

In my research, the primary goal was to make this technology simpler and more affordable. I have shown how a practical, cost-effective, and easily deployable architecture can be formed by combining optical fiber and radio frequency. This process refreshes the signal to improve the quality of data transmission, which is particularly essential for future telecom systems.

Practical Applications

Radio Over Fiber technology can be used significantly in various sectors, for example:

  • Large Office Buildings and Stadiums: This technology enables easy wireless signal distribution to every part of a building or stadium. Particularly, Distributed Antenna Systems are used to ensure signal delivery even through walls or other obstructions.
  • Airports: RoF is an effective solution to provide high-speed Wi-Fi facilities to waiting passengers.
  • 5G and 6G Networks: Using millimeter-wave frequencies, this technology will play a vital role in ensuring high-speed connectivity in the future.

By creating advanced connections through the combination of optical fiber and radio frequency, it not only enables superior network provisioning, but will also support future in-building service (IBS) systems and smart city connectivity plans.

Advice for Young Researchers

The key to successful research is perseverance and consistency. Failures may come during research, but with the right guidance and effort, they can be overcome. A researcher should build a strong research network and regularly review the literature.

Message from Rajibul Islam:

“Research is a process where failure is a part of learning. To discover something new, patience and creativity must go together. My message to young people is—when choosing a research topic, first ensure it is unique and relevant. Also, if you set up a lab and build prototypes to implement your research results, it will prove even more effective in the long run.”

Contributions to Industry and Research

Throughout my long academic and research career, I have published around 50 journal and conference papers, working on optical and wireless communication technologies. This also includes experience in writing book chapters. Additionally, while working in the industry, I have delivered talks at various conferences and symposiums on future telecommunication technologies.

I believe that the successful implementation of RoF technology will transform our perspective on future network deployments and make the telecommunications sector more efficient and sustainable.
