The campus of Northern University of Business and Technology, Khulna, shines every day with the light of knowledge. Here, Dr. Ferdib Al Islam, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is tirelessly engaged in his research. After earning his Bachelor’s degree from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University and a Master’s degree from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Ferdib is now making significant contributions to the country’s scientific community through his research.
An enthusiastic scientist in research:
What is the driving force that inspires him to dream new dreams every day and venture into the unknown? That force is science, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications in healthcare. He says, “My primary focus is on machine learning, deep learning, explainable AI, computer vision, and health informatics.” The main goal of his research is to find effective solutions to health-related problems in developing countries.
Dr. Ferdib’s research is playing an extraordinary role in identifying complex diseases such as cancer, stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and COVID-19. His “Crop-RecFIS” model is guiding farmers towards optimal crop cultivation, while “COV-Doctor” and “COV-SSDS” are serving as supportive tools for early prediction and proper management of COVID-19 patients.
He further adds, “Explainable AI technology not only diagnoses diseases but also provides explanatory information that assists doctors in making informed decisions.”
Qualities of a Scientist:
What qualities should a scientist possess? According to Dr. Ferdib, curiosity, patience, and integrity are the main traits of a scientist. “Failure is normal in scientific practice, but every failure creates a new opportunity for learning.”
He says, “The ability to work as a team and to explain complex topics in simple language makes a scientist even more effective. Additionally, a sense of social responsibility and the desire to benefit people turn science into a true service to humanity.”
A message for young scientists:
Dr. Ferdib’s message for young students in Bangladesh is truly inspiring:
“Dream, be brave, and remain persistent. The world of science and technology is vast with limitless possibilities. Start your studies and research in the field that interests you.
The path of research is not easy. It requires hard work, patience, and a willingness to accept failure. But do not fear failure; every failure is a new learning opportunity. Another important aspect is networking. Connect with your teachers, classmates, and the international community. This way, you can learn more and improve your own work.
Lastly, I would say, science and technology are essential for a country’s development. Through hard work and unwavering determination, you can play a vital role in the nation’s progress. Dream, work, and be part of the journey to advance the country.”
