If anyone ever says that reaching the peak of success requires struggle and perseverance, Professor Ismail Md. Mofizur Rahman is a living example of that statement. From starting as a young lecturer at the University of Chittagong to establishing himself as a professor at Fukushima University in Japan, every step of his journey tells a story of struggle, hard work, and the pursuit of knowledge.
A Journey Toward the First Light:
Professor Ismail began his career as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Chittagong. From October 2002 to March 2012, he worked in the Chemistry Department, and from March 2012 to September 2015 in the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. For over a decade, he dedicated himself to teaching and research there. But his journey didn’t end there. His goal was advanced research and to find solutions to environmental issues on a global scale. With this aim, he earned his PhD in Environmental Analytical Chemistry from Kanazawa University, Japan, in 2011.
A Long Career in Academia in Japan:
After voluntarily retiring from the University of Chittagong in 2015, Professor Ismail joined Fukushima University in Japan. There, he began his duties as an Associate Professor at the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity. Due to his skills and dedication, he has been serving at this institution as a Professor since April 2024.
Alongside his regular responsibilities, since March 2015 he has also been serving as a Collaborative Professor at Kanazawa University in Japan. Before that, he worked at Kanazawa University as a Visiting Research Professor from December 2014 to August 2015, and as a JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow from April 2012 to March 2014.
His research endeavors do not stop there. From October 2004 to September 2005, he was involved in research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (now ‘Science Tokyo’) in Japan as a TokyoTech-UNESCO Research Fellow.
Before beginning his career as a teacher and researcher, from May 2001 to October 2002 he worked at Coats Bangladesh Limited, a subsidiary of Coats plc, UK.
Professor Ismail earned his PhD in Environmental Analytical Chemistry from Kanazawa University in 2011. In addition, he obtained a diploma in Environmental Science from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2005, an MSc in Applied Chemistry, and a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Chittagong.
Currently, he lives in the city of Fukushima, Japan, with his wife and two children. His wife is also a researcher by profession and is a silent companion in his success.
Fields of Research and Vision:
Professor Ismail Md. Mofizur Rahman works on environmental pollution and remediation. His research especially focuses on the behavior of environmental pollutants and their impact on the biosphere. His work in sustainable waste management and the development of energy-efficient technology will provide direction for the future. He is also researching the potential industrial applications of organic liquid mixtures, which will open new horizons in process engineering design.

According to Professor Ismail, conducting research in Bangladesh can often feel challenging. However, his message is clear: “Believe in yourself. Read plenty of scientific articles and strive to do something new even within limited resources. Proper planning and perseverance will bring you success.”
