Nowsha Farha is a Bangladeshi researcher currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Cambridge, focusing on “artificial intelligence in education.” Her research supervisor is the distinguished academic and scholar, Professor Rupert Wegerif.

Nowsha Farha completed her primary and secondary education at Maple Leaf International School in Dhaka, where she excelled in her O Level and A Level examinations. She then earned a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Sociology and Data Science from the Institute of Education at University College London (UCL). At the same institution, she obtained a Master’s degree (MSc) in Social Policy and Social Research Methods. Later, she pursued a second Master’s degree (MSc) in Social Research Methods (majoring in Data Science) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Currently, her main research objective is to develop training programs about artificial intelligence for teachers and to evaluate their effectiveness. She is also actively involved in student leadership, research assistance, and various volunteer activities.

💬 Q&A Session

Question: What is the subject of your research?

Answer: I am designing and conducting a dialogic professional development training on artificial intelligence (AI), which will provide teachers with advanced knowledge, skills, and awareness about AI in education.

In this era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, AI plays a crucial role in society. However, adequate and quality AI-related training for teachers is not always readily available. Recent research has shown that many teachers feel a lack of confidence when it comes to using AI.

Meanwhile, the world is rapidly becoming technology-dependent, and changes in technology are happening swiftly. Therefore, it is vital for teachers to stay updated with modern knowledge and skills. Through proper training, teachers can gain both accurate understanding and confidence about AI, enabling them to effectively transfer this knowledge to their students.

Question: How can your research benefit society?

Answer: My research will evaluate the effectiveness of this training program and may, in the future, be used to inform the formulation of educational policies.

Education is a cornerstone of a nation. Positive educational practices can bring about change in society. Once teachers acquire proper knowledge and skills regarding AI, they will be able to provide students with a more modern and practical education.

This will better prepare students for a technology-driven society. At the same time, training teachers in AI can make the education system more innovative and effective. By applying new teaching methods, students’ skills and creativity will be enhanced.

Question: What qualities do you think a scientist should possess?

Answer: A researcher should have critical thinking, independent thinking, and originality. These allow for the generation of new ideas and in-depth analysis of information.

Additionally, honesty is extremely important in research, as it is crucial to present results accurately and precisely. Patience and perseverance are also essential qualities for a researcher.

Question: Do you have a message for young students in Bangladesh who want to work in science?

Answer: My sincere best wishes to all young students in Bangladesh. For those looking to pursue science, it is very important to develop strong skills in mathematics and English.

Today, knowledge of mathematics is a fundamental foundation for research and technological advancement. Practicing mathematics regularly and participating in math competitions can be very beneficial.

Moreover, proficiency in English is highly important for working at an international level. Building a solid foundation in other subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, or economics is also necessary.

Bangladeshi students are highly talented and hardworking. With honesty and perseverance, even tough paths can be overcome. I am still a student myself, and these words come from my own experiences.
