An Unwavering Journey in Science and Humanity
Research is not just a profession; it is a passion that drives the scientist towards understanding the unknown. One such devoted scientist is Md. Shoriful Islam, who, while serving as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacy, Islamic University, Kushtia, is also pursuing his Ph.D. as a researcher at Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Japan.
A Journey of Inspiration:
After completing his B.Pharm and M.Pharm from the Department of Pharmacy, Rajshahi University, Md. Shoriful Islam, driven by his deep interest in research, dedicated himself to both teaching and research. In his teaching career, he has previously served as a lecturer at Islamic University, Kushtia and Khwaja Yunus Ali University, Sirajganj.
His initial interest in research began during practical classes in college. At that time, the joy of verifying chemical processes independently inspired him to pursue research. Driven by this interest and passion, he chose teaching and research as both his profession and calling.
Focus of the Research: New Possibilities in Parkinson’s Disease:
Currently, Shoriful Islam is engrossed in Parkinson’s disease research. In his lab, the interaction between alpha-synuclein (α-synuclein), a key cause of Parkinson’s disease, and UBL-3 (Ubiquitin-like-3) protein is being analyzed.
Bangladeshi and Chinese Ph.D. and postdoctoral students are working in various areas of this research. Their efforts are focused on gaining a more detailed understanding of the interaction processes involving UBL-3 protein. The main goal of this research is to develop an effective and side-effect-free drug for Parkinson’s disease.
In addition, Shoriful and his team are also working with human brain samples affected by Parkinson’s disease. Through this research, they hope to open new horizons in understanding the cause of Parkinson’s disease and developing effective treatments.
Unveiling Opportunities Through Research:
So far, there is no satisfactory medicine for Parkinson’s disease on the market. However, Shoriful and his colleagues are tirelessly working to meet this challenge. Their research is not just limited to finding the cause of this disease; it is also opening possibilities for cost-effective and efficient medicine centered on the UBL-3 protein.
In their lab, Bangladeshi and Chinese Ph.D. and postdoctoral researchers are working to gain a deeper understanding of the interaction processes involved in Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, research on human brain samples is ongoing to uncover new directions.
These studies promise not only potential cures for the disease but also a path to develop safe, side-effect-free, and effective medications.
Love for Research: The Key to Success:
Shoriful believes that love for research and finding joy in one’s work are the keys to success. He says,
“Failures in research are also part of learning. Every failure is a chance to acquire a new skill.”
The seed of his passion for research was sown during practical classes in his college days. He recalls:
“To do any work perfectly, one must enjoy it, and that comes from finding joy in the work itself. My appreciation for research began with practical classes in college. I owe much gratitude to the chemistry teachers at Rajshahi Government City College at that time, who allowed us to conduct practical classes independently. We experienced great joy by verifying new chemical processes on our own, which has had a significant impact on my life as a researcher. It is because of this passion that I still enjoy learning new techniques and achieving results in research.”
Such positive experiences and mindset have always fueled his progress in research.
Perspective on Research: Shoriful’s Advice
According to Shoriful, research opportunities and environments are very limited in our country. Still, those who remain committed to research deserve praise. He humbly says,
“As a mere student of science, I have no authority to comment on scientists. However, I do have a few personal suggestions for students.”
His suggestions can serve as guidelines for students:
- Research Centered on Real-life Problems:
When choosing a research topic, give priority to problems that can provide effective solutions for society and the country. - The Purpose of Research:
Research should not be just for enriching profiles. The goal should be to bring positive change to society. - Encouragement for Students:
He also highlights the importance of love for research and maintaining honesty and ethics for newcomers.
These guidelines will inspire students in their research journeys and help them progress in the right direction.
A Message for the Youth: Dream and Persevere
Shoriful’s message for young people interested in science:
- Choose a research path based on what you enjoy most.
- Start by tackling small problems and move forward step by step.
- Work hard with patience and build your network.
- Above all, stay honest and ethical.
Conclusion
The life and work of Md. Shoriful Islam are an inspiration for scientific pursuit. His research has opened the possibility of developing effective medication for Parkinson’s disease, sparking hope for countless lives in the future.
His story teaches us that with dedication, patience, and love, any challenge can be overcome.
