For those who are considering applying for a PhD abroad, the CV is an important tool. If you fail to present your CV in a neat and appealing way, professors or the hiring authority may simply exclude you from the shortlist, assuming you lack the skill to present yourself smartly. Here are some very basic tips on how to make your CV more attractive—
First
Keep your CV within two pages.
Second
Write your CV using well-known font styles and sizes (Times New Roman/Arial, 11/12). Do not use any colors. Make sure everything is left aligned.
Third
Do not use a photo on your CV. Other than your name, corresponding address, email ID and phone number, do not include any other personal information.
Fourth
Do not use table formats or any other complex format for presenting information.
Fifth
At the very beginning of the first page, be sure to include a summary. In 3 to 4 sentences, state your acquired qualifications, knowledge, and future goals.
Sixth
After Education on the first page, include your Skills. Clearly and simply state your wet lab, dry lab skills, programming/computational skills, various software skills, and language skills.
Seventh
Next, if you have publications, include them. Both journal articles and conference papers can be listed together or separately.
Eighth
If you have attended any conferences, mention them (name, date, and venue).
Ninth
Listing referees is optional. But if you wish to include them, briefly provide their name, affiliation, and email address. It’s better to also note the relationship (teacher, master’s supervisor, etc.) next to the name. Always inform the teacher before listing their name.
After organizing your CV in this way, be sure to have it checked by a senior or a teacher.
