The Future of Research in Bangladesh: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Way Forward

It’s 2 AM in Singapore when suddenly my phone rings. It must be from Bangladesh, as calls at midnight usually come from there. Such late-night calls always make me anxious—could it be bad news? But I felt relieved to hear Mohsin’s voice on the other end. Mohsin is a young researcher, working in healthcare. He said, ‘Sir, there’s something on my mind, but I can’t share it with anyone!‘ I wasn’t surprised. The passion and excitement of young people deeply invested in research is nothing new, and I am familiar with it. The world of research is like that—new ideas and innovative concepts often emerge in the middle of the night. But the problem is, on the path of new thoughts and innovation, there are many obstacles and challenges.

The research environment in Bangladesh is still quite challenging, yet there is no shortage of potential. Due to limited resources, irregular financial support, and infrastructural constraints, young researchers often don’t get adequate opportunities. The positive side, however, is that many are still working tirelessly—some alone, some in teams—dedicated to improving the quality of research. In this article, we will discuss the current state of research, its challenges, and some practical solutions.

Current State and Obstacles of Research

Limited Funding:
In Bangladesh, investment in research and development (R&D) constitutes only about 0.3%-0.5% of GDP on average (according to data from the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh). In comparison, developed countries invest 2%-3%. Naturally, this lack of financial support makes it difficult to sustain the enthusiasm of researchers.

Environmental Constraints:
Frequent power outages, lack of high-speed internet, and inadequate infrastructure often set back many researchers. In many parts of the country, essential research equipment and support systems are not readily available.

Lack of Mental Support and Mentorship:
Beyond financial assistance, research requires professional guidance and emotional encouragement. In Bangladesh, mentorship opportunities are limited. Young researchers often feel discouraged as they try to navigate the path alone.

Gap Between Researchers and Entrepreneurs:
There is a need for deep and long-term connections between various universities and established researchers and entrepreneurs abroad. Many expatriate researchers want to contribute to the country, but in practice, a strong sense of ‘teamwork’ between them and local researchers is yet to develop.

Opportunities and Initiatives

Still, within our youth exists remarkable drive and creativity. Many tirelessly conduct research, independently searching for solutions to problems. Publications by Bangladeshis in areas like technology, healthcare, psychology, or artificial intelligence are gradually growing in international journals. Although there are only a few local research teams, with proper support, their number and capacity could be increased many times over.

Actionable Steps: Recommendations and Guidance

Several initiatives can be taken to advance the research environment. Here are a few practical suggestions—

  1. Form Organized Teams
    • Create a small team with fellow students, colleagues, or teachers interested in similar topics.
    • Open a group on Facebook/LinkedIn or any digital platform to meet or discuss at least once a week.
    • Build focus groups on specific topics (such as artificial intelligence, medical research, psychology) to identify challenges and create pathways to solutions.
  2. Regular Sharing Sessions and Workshops
    • Create a platform to exchange work, challenges, and ideas at least once a month.
    • Even if large events aren’t possible, establish a culture of regular small-scale discussions.
    • Invite experts in relevant fields to workshops or seminars focused on specific research topics.
  3. Inter-University and Virtual Community Building
    • Search for like-minded researchers at various universities using social media or research networks (ResearchGate, Google Scholar, etc.).
    • Share knowledge and experiences through virtual meetings or conferences.
    • Develop a roadmap for long-term collaborative work.
  4. Focus on Knowledge Creation, Not Just Publications
    • High-quality research is essential for finding fundamental solutions to deep-seated problems.
    • Prioritize quality research over a rapid increase in the number of publications.
    • Apply knowledge gained from research to entrepreneurship or to solve real-life problems.
  5. Local and International Partnerships and Investment
    • Maintain regular communication with expatriate researchers; clearly communicate your situation and the type of help you need.
    • Seek financial support by reaching out to local industries, banks, or international organizations.
    • Continue efforts to increase government research grants and incentives—initiate discussions with policymakers for joint efforts.
  6. Mentorship and Long-Term Planning
    • Experienced researchers or teachers can provide hands-on support to young people.
    • Maintain a clear 3–5 year plan with specific milestones to achieve.
    • No matter the age or position, positive mentorship is crucial for everyone.

Final Thoughts

To sustain research in the country, we need long-term planning, a collaborative mindset, and unparalleled enthusiasm. Our young people have immense potential, which, with proper guidance, can lead to world-class success. There are already examples of innovative work happening with modest resources and small efforts. Now, the need is to spread this drive even further. Respect and best wishes go out to those already working tirelessly. And for those who wish to get involved—here’s some advice: form a small team, have regular discussions, and gradually build a lasting research community. In the long run, this path will make us stronger, more innovative, and globally competitive.

Biggani Org runs a volunteer group to support these young researchers. If you’re interested, join us! By joining this team, you’ll have opportunities to discuss research-related problems and network with scientists for mentoring.
