Technology of a New Era: Seeing Through Walls with Wi-Fi!

Did you know that the security camera of the future might not be a camera at all? Now, even a basic Wi-Fi router is enough—to see the position and movement of people on the other side of a wall! For example, think of an elderly person living alone—their movement can be monitored from outside their room, even through walls, using this technology. Such an astonishing technology has been developed by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.

How Does This Technology Work?

The core foundation of this technology is Artificial Intelligence (AI). Researchers analyze the “phase” and “amplitude” of Wi-Fi signals to determine where each signal has reflected from—such as from the human body. Using this data, they construct a 3D model that reveals how a person is standing or moving. Imagine, as though it’s an invisible camera—able to detect human presence even through walls.

This technology is called DensePose from WiFi, where every pixel is mapped to specific points on the human body. In other words, Wi-Fi data alone can detect a person’s actual posture or pose.

Potential Uses:

The practical applications of this technology could be vast. For example:

  • 👴 Safely monitoring elderly individuals—especially those who live alone.
  • 🏡 Enhancing home security—detecting if there is any intruder on the other side of a wall.
  • 🧠 Smart home systems—controlling various devices simply through movement, without touching anything.

The best part is, no camera or extra devices are needed—Wi-Fi signals alone are sufficient.

But There Are Concerns…

However, while this technology opens up new possibilities, it also raises serious questions about privacy. If someone were to use this technology to secretly observe someone else’s movements, it could become a form of digital espionage. The European Union (EU) has already begun imposing strict regulations and drafting policies concerning such surveillance technologies to ensure the privacy of its citizens remains protected.

For this reason, researchers and experts say now is the time to develop policies regarding the use of this technology—so that it cannot be used to violate human rights.

Conclusion

Seeing bodies through Wi-Fi—it sounds like science fiction! But now, it’s reality. Through artificial intelligence and the analysis of reflected signals, we have reached a stage where even the invisible world can be observed. The real challenge now is to ensure this technology is used both for the welfare of humanity and for the protection of personal privacy.
