Biggani.org (biggani.org) is organizing an inspiring evening for Bangladeshi students and young researchers. In the upcoming online interview session, we will be joined by Bangladeshi researcher Sanjida Afrin—currently pursuing her PhD at Florida International University (FIU), USA. The aim of this event is to closely observe and understand the journey of young Bangladeshis in the global research arena, and to create practical guidance for future generations.
Sanjida Afrin began her academic journey with undergraduate studies in Bangladesh. She then moved to Europe for higher studies—completing her master’s in Hungary and gaining hands-on experience with modern lab culture through a research internship in the Czech Republic. Working in such a multicultural research environment prepared her to actively contribute to an international research team in the United States. She is currently working in Dr. Jana Fierst’s Fierst Lab at FIU, where theory, computational modeling, and bioinformatics are combined to understand genome evolution and the organization and transformation of life.
Her main field of research is the Maternal-to-Zygotic Transition (MZT)—a crucial stage in early embryonic development. Simply put, at the beginning of life, an embryo depends on proteins and genetic instructions from the mother; later, the embryo’s own genes gradually become active. Her research focuses on finding out exactly how and when specific proteins degrade during this transition, and how this process varies across different species. By working with various closely related species of Caenorhabditis worms, she is making important contributions toward understanding species boundaries.
This interview session is not just about sharing research stories; it’s also a chance for students to receive real, practical guidance. How should one prepare for higher studies and research abroad? What are the strategies for finding scholarships and lab opportunities? What are the differences between the research cultures of Europe and the United States? All these questions will be answered by Sanjida based on her personal experiences. For those interested in biology, genetics, molecular biology, or bioinformatics, this conversation could serve as a clear guide for future planning.
