Sadya Rahman’s (45) life changed suddenly when her doctor informed her that she had a tumor in her breast. With anxiety and fear, she listened to the next words: “You may need to undergo chemotherapy.” Just thinking about this challenging phase of treatment made her shudder. But what if there was a system that could determine for certain—does she truly need chemotherapy or not?

This is the very question addressed by New York-based startup Ataraxis AI. This company has developed a system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology in cancer treatment, capable of accurately predicting the type of cancer a patient has and the risk of recurrence in the future. The company’s co-founder, Jan Witosky, says, “Our goal is to free patients from unnecessary chemotherapy. With AI, it’s possible to determine the risk of cancer recurrence with high accuracy.”

At the heart of Ataraxis AI’s technology is an AI model called ‘Kestrel’, which analyzes information from high-resolution images of millions of cancer cells. The model is trained with “vision transformer” and “self-supervised learning” technology, enabling it to detect patterns invisible to the human eye.

World-renowned AI scientist and Meta’s Chief AI Researcher Yann LeCun says, “This kind of technology can bring about an unprecedented revolution in healthcare.”

Recently, Ataraxis AI is set to launch the world’s first AI-based prognostic test for breast cancer, “Ataraxis Breast.” This test analyzes images of tissue samples from hundreds of thousands of patients to provide highly accurate predictions. Liza Khan, who has used this technology, says, “I avoided the terrible side effects of chemotherapy and received the right treatment. My life has started anew.”

However, experts have issued a note of caution. They say that while the use of technology is important, the doctor’s decision should always be final. Renowned cancer specialist Dr. Anwar Hossain states, “The use of AI technology is promising, but the role of physicians is essential and indisputable.”

Ataraxis AI has already raised $20.4 million in funding and plans to expand this technology to diagnose other types of cancer in the future. Medical scientists are hopeful that these AI-based technologies will usher in a new era in cancer treatment. In the days ahead, patients may no longer have to dread the severe side effects of chemotherapy, but instead regain the assurance of a healthy and normal life.
