Bird flu, or avian influenza virus, primarily proliferates in birds. However, in recent times, its spread has affected humans as well. It is a contagious disease and, over time, it can multiply and be fatal to both birds and humans.
Symptoms of bird flu usually appear within 1 to 5 days of infection. These include fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. In addition, viral pneumonia and severe respiratory inflammation can also present as symptoms.
In 1997, bird flu appeared in epidemic proportions in Hong Kong. Since then, people have been searching for its source. It is mainly transmitted through the saliva of birds. The virus can spread in various ways, especially if food is cooked below a specific temperature. Therefore, it’s best to avoid places where the virus may be present.
Efforts are being made to control bird flu with drugs like Oseltamivir and Zanamivir. However, they haven’t proved to be highly effective so far. Attempts are also being made to develop vaccines. We hope that correct use of these measures brings success.
