Recently, we interviewed Dr. Azizul Haque, an author and PhD holder, who is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Biotechnology Department at Yeungnam University, South Korea. In this interview, he discussed his research and engaged in many important conversations. Read his interview below for more details:

First, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am Dr. Azizul Haque, currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biotechnology at Yeungnam University, South Korea.
My educational journey began in Dhamrai, Dhaka, where I completed my primary and secondary education. Later, I finished my higher secondary education at BPATC School and College in Savar. My passion for higher education led me to Bangladesh Agricultural University, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry and a master’s degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics.
After that, I had the opportunity to pursue a PhD in Bioinformatics at Yeungnam University, South Korea, which was a huge achievement for me. After completing my PhD in 2022, I worked for a while as a post-doctoral researcher, which further enriched my skills and experience.
Currently, in addition to my research, I am dedicated to helping students build expertise in bioinformatics and genomics. My goal is to nurture the necessary skills and passion in students for research so that they can make significant contributions to these fields in the future.

What is the focus of your research?

In my research, I use advanced bioinformatics technologies to analyze animal datasets, which helps uncover critical insights in agriculture, animal husbandry, health, and genetic modeling. For example, we identify disease-resistant traits in livestock and review genetic diversity among different species, both of which contribute to improvements in animal production and health systems.
Through animal genomics, we have developed new technologies to enhance animal health and productivity. The results of our research play a key role in elevating the quality of meat, milk, and other productive traits in livestock. Additionally, we evaluate the impact of natural and environmental conditions, which may negatively affect animal health and productivity. Using genetic selection methods, we identify the best genetic traits—leading to improved productivity and animal health.
Currently, I am also involved in bioinformatics research related to human cancer, analyzing the genetic and bioinformatics aspects of cancer. Through this research, I am examining the genetic features of cancer and the effectiveness of bioinformatics approaches in its treatment.

How does your research benefit, or will benefit, society?

The significance of bioinformatics and genomics in modern scientific research is increasing rapidly.
Bioinformatics usage has sparked a revolution for humanity. Researchers are now able to analyze the human genetic code and extract information that makes the cure of cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, and other complex ailments possible. Nowadays, diagnosis is not solely based on symptoms or tests, but also on genetic and bioinformatics methods to predict disease risk. Advanced treatment protocols and new medications for severe illnesses like cancer or cardiac diseases are now being developed through bioinformatics. In particular, bioinformatics is driving a revolution in “Personalized Medicine,” enabling the design of medication and therapeutic approaches tailored to each person’s genetic profile—making treatments more effective and safer.
Moreover, bioinformatics efforts go beyond human health, playing a significant role in boosting productivity and health in the animal world as well. By analyzing the genetic characteristics of animals, new possibilities have emerged in agriculture and animal production that not only increase productivity but also help develop environmentally sustainable technologies.
For instance, genetic modeling and selection are improving crop yields and boosting livestock productivity. We are now able to enhance milk production, disease resistance, and breed faster-growing animals—playing a crucial part in ensuring food security around the world.
Through my research, I am striving to develop new technologies and methods that can revolutionize global agriculture and animal production. I firmly believe that research in bioinformatics and animal genomics will not only foster scientific advancements but also play an essential role in food security, health, and maintaining environmental balance in our society.
