We recently interviewed Dr. Muhammad Kamruzzaman Khan. He was born in 1974 in Tangail and completed his MBBS from Mymensingh Medical College in 1999. In 2003, he joined the Health Cadre through the 21st BCS examination. Read on for more details:
First, we’d like to know about you.
I was born in 1974 in Rouha village, Ghatail upazila, Tangail district, Bangladesh. In 1999, I earned my MBBS degree from Mymensingh Medical College under Dhaka University. At the start of my career, I worked at USAID for about two years. In 2003, I joined the Cadre Service through the 21st BCS. During my career, I have worked in Union Sub-Centers, Upazila Health Complexes, Divisional Health Offices, the Directorate of Health, and Medical College Hospitals.
In 2004, I received an MPH (Hospital Management) degree from the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM). Later, in 2023, I received a PhD from Bangladesh Agricultural University.
Currently, I am working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Public Health at Mymensingh Medical College. Alongside teaching and research, I also practice general medicine to a limited extent.
What is your field of research?
I have been involved in research since 2003. I conduct both health system and biomedical research. My work covers a range of public health issues, including hospital management, tuberculosis, leprosy, lightning strikes, and medical education. I have published more than sixty research articles.
How are your research works helping us, or how might they help in the future?
My published research is being used as baseline data for health topics in Bangladesh. Relevant doctors and postgraduate students are accessing up-to-date information. The appropriate authorities can use this information for health management, medical education, disease control, and prevention as needed.
Could you share any special experiences from your research work?
Collecting research data is often challenging. One of my studies was on “Coverage of Health Information in National Newspapers of Bangladesh.” For this research, I needed support from the Press Institute of Bangladesh, editors of various newspapers, and the Journalism and Mass Communication as well as Printing and Publication departments at Dhaka University. Initially, I was hesitant about getting their cooperation. But with their wonderful and overall support, I was able to successfully complete the research on time. I am grateful to everyone involved.
What qualities do you think are necessary for a scientist?
A scientist must strive to maintain the quality of research, alongside patience and skill. Only then will it be possible to generate genuine evidence from research.
Do you have any message or advice for young students in Bangladesh who want to work in science?
The field of research in Bangladesh is expanding day by day. For research, sometimes government or private grants are available. Those who are interested can start by getting proper and practical training. With continuous work, skills and perfection will increase further. It is essential to enhance mutual cooperation in research.
