In episode #72 of the Biggani.org interview series, we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Nisa Khan. Dr. Nisa completed her studies at Viqarunnisa School in Bangladesh before moving to the United States. There, she attended high school, did her undergraduate studies at Macalester College, and then earned her PhD from the University of Minnesota. In her career, she has worked at American Express, JDS Uniphase, AT&T and Lucent Bell Laboratories, and Honeywell.
In her interview with Biggani.org, she shared that from a young age she had a keen interest in mathematics and physics, which ultimately inspired her to become a scientist. She expressed gratitude to her teachers in Bangladesh, especially recalling Yunus Ali from Dhaka College and Lakhi Apa from Viqarunnisa School. Thanks to their encouragement, her foundation in math and physics became very strong.
She spoke about her remarkable experience working at the world-famous Bell Labs. This was a significant chapter in her life, where she worked on optical fiber research.
She passionately encourages women to pursue science. Her advice to them is to discover where their own talents lie, to have strong determination, and to move forward with confidence. Ultimately, this is a long journey, so patience is essential.
Later, she developed an interest in understanding economics beyond the realm of science, and her mathematics background helped her greatly in this field. She went on to obtain relevant certificates and licenses to work in finance. Her drive to persist with new challenges was instrumental in her success in this sector.
She now works proficiently in both ‘science’ and ‘finance’ at the same time. She is the founder of IEM ASSET and IEM LED. Her book “Understanding LED Illumination,” published by CRC Press, has received wide acclaim for its detailed discussion of lighting technology.
