While studying at university, many people think, “GPA isn’t everything!” That’s somewhat true, but not entirely accurate. Research and real-world experience show that a good GPA opens many doors in life. From scholarships to job interviews, higher studies to self-confidence—GPA has an impact everywhere. Let’s take a look at the areas where GPA plays a major role.

1. GPA in the Eyes of Employers

Many companies claim they don’t look at GPA, but reality is a bit different. According to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in the U.S., 46.3% of employers still consider GPA for new graduates. While this number was 73.3% in 2019 and has decreased, the influence is far from gone.
Especially for fresh graduates, GPA is a significant indicator, since they lack much work experience. Many employers form a negative impression if a GPA is below 3.0.

2. Scholarships and Tuition Fee Waivers

Dean’s List—is an honorary list where only those with a good GPA earn a spot. In Bangladesh, many private universities provide 50–75% tuition waivers if you can maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher. In some cases, a GPA above 3.9 can get you a 100% scholarship.

Many organizations outside universities—like BRAC, Daffodil Foundation, UNICEF—offer various scholarships, and during the application process, GPA is considered an important criterion.

3. GPA on the Path to Graduate and PhD Studies

For higher studies in the United States, Canada, and Europe, GPA is a core eligibility requirement. Research shows—

  • 3.5 GPA students have about a 30% chance of admission with funding for higher studies
  • For students with a 3.8 GPA, this possibility rises to about 66%

In other words, raising your GPA increases not just your chances at university, but also for scholarships, research funding, and TA/RA opportunities.

4. Starting Salary and GPA

A study by Zou et al. (2022) found that those with good GPAs have relatively higher starting salaries. They found that, depending on the GPA gap, average salary differences can be as much as 29.6%.

Another study in the Journal of Applied Psychology reported that students with higher GPAs tend to perform better on the job and receive higher supervisor ratings. The correlation rate was about r ≈ 0.30, indicating a moderate positive relationship.

5. GPA for International Prestigious Fellowships

To win the world’s most prestigious scholarships and fellowships, GPA is a basic requirement.

FellowshipRequired Average GPA
Fulbright (USA)3.7–4.0 (varies by department)
Rhodes (UK)3.9+
Marshall3.8+
Hertz3.9+
NSF GRFP3.8+

[Note: Some scholarships can be obtained with a lower GPA, but in those cases, you must prove yourself through GRE scores, research, or significant extracurricular contributions.]

6. Campus Jobs: Opportunities to Become an RA or TA

For on-campus jobs such as Research Assistant (RA) or Teaching Assistant (TA), GPA plays a major role.
A survey conducted at 225 universities in the United States found—

68% of faculty members consider GPA as the primary criterion for hiring.

These types of jobs not only offer financial support but also provide research experience that greatly impacts your prospects for future graduate studies.

7. GPA in Immigration and Study Visa Applications

Although many immigration policies do not directly require GPA, for example, in the Canada Express Entry scheme, education points are awarded based on transcripts. If your GPA is low, your application may hold less weight.

In the United States, many universities require you to maintain your GPA in order to continue receiving scholarships or funding. If your GPA drops, the funding can be revoked and your visa status may be at risk.

8. Relationship with Mental Health and Self-Confidence

Research has shown that students with higher GPAs experience less depression and anxiety.

  • GPA had a negative correlation with depression: r ≈ –0.60
  • Positive correlation with self-confidence and family support: r ≈ 0.47–0.62

In addition, those with high GPAs generally have better time management, consistency, and grit. These habits tend to continue in their professional lives and contribute to career success.

Educational Psychologist Zimmerman has shown—

GPA is directly related to a student’s self-confidence, goal setting, and long-term resilience.

🔚 Final Thoughts: GPA Isn’t Everything, But It Is A Lot

GPA is certainly not the only measure of success in life. But it does open many doors, builds good habits, and gives you an edge in many important aspects of life.

You may be an excellent leader, a thoughtful researcher, or a creative artist. But if you have a good GPA, you can showcase your abilities more convincingly—with less competition and more opportunities.

So it can be said—“GPA is not everything, but it is often the first thing.”
