Doing a PhD is actually not that easy. Where you are doing your PhD, under whom you are working, your publications, conference presentations—all these play a significant role in shaping your future. Now, General Aziz, the former Chief of Army Staff, is pursuing a PhD under the Vice Chancellor Kalimullah at Begum Rokeya University. Does this PhD have any value? It even raises a question about who is the student and who is the mentor here! Similarly, if you complete your bachelor’s degree at a university, become a faculty member there, and then pursue your PhD under a colleague in that very institution, it’s natural for anyone to question the integrity of such a degree.

Let’s consider a teacher in a Bangladeshi university and another who spends day and night in a lab in a North American, European, or Australian university, completing their PhD with hard work and dedication over 5-6 years. Whose subject matter expertise will be superior—the one who went through rigorous research or the one who, while casually eating snacks behind the campus cafeteria and sipping Coke, finishes a PhD under their own colleague? Everyone understands the reality of these situations now.

Teacher’s Inspiration and Leadership:

A good teacher holds the key to inspiring their students. While at IUT, we had Dr. Saleh Sir for Hydrology, and Dr. Monsur Sir, Dr. Anisul Haque Sir, and Dr. Salehin Sir for other water resource subjects. Each of them was a legend in their respective research fields. I used to be so nervous to speak in front of them, my voice would tremble. I was so inspired by their research and teaching that after graduating from IUT, I worked for two years as a research assistant at the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) with them. It’s been almost ten years since I left IWFM, yet I am still involved in related research fields and still feel that same inspiration.

How do teachers inspire students?

That’s why I deeply believe that if you want to inspire your students in class, make a real impact on them, and earn their respect as a teacher, you must reach that level of knowledge—one that can only be achieved through hard work and dedication. There’s simply no substitute.
